Renewing an IP Address in Mac OS 10.3 (Panther)

Description: This page contains a walk through on how to release/renew an IP address in Mac OS 10.3.

Symptoms: No network connectivity. IP address is "self assigned" 169.254.x.x

Goal: Follow these steps to generate a legitimate IP address.

  1. Click on the Apple Menu and choose System Preferences.
  2. When System Preferences opens click the icon.
  3. Below are the Network System Preferences. You will be editing the settings for Built-in Ethernet.

    There are three ways to access the settings.

    1. Double click on Built-in Ethernet.
    2. Ensure Built-in Ethernet is highlighted and click the Configure button.
    3. Click on Network Status and choose Built-in Ethernet.

  4. This is the Network settings with a "self-assigned" 169.254.x.x IP address.
  5. Click the button.
  6. If the operation is successful a legitimate IP address should appear.
  7. When finished click on the System Preferences menu and choose Quit.
