How to Wash Grapes (and Other Produce)
I learned this quick and easy method to wash grapes from my mother-in-law, and I use it to wash produce like grapes, broccoli florets, etc. I don't use it on strawberries because they are a little too delicate.
When you buy grapes at the store, they may come in a perforated plastic bag. I always put that into a plastic produce bag and tie a knot in the top. When I get home, I snip off the knot with scissors and then wash the grapes. Here is my washing procedure:
- Put a drop or two of dish washing liquid onto the grapes in the bag (if you use too much dish soap, they'll be too sudsy).
- Set the bag under the kitchen faucet.
- Fill the bag with cool water until the water and suds just cover the grapes.
- Grasp opposite sides of the bag firmly in each hand.
- Vigorously agitate the bag to allow the soapy water to clean the grapes.
- Dump the grapes into a strainer and thoroughly rinse the soap off under running water.

That doesn't seem like a good idea. Christine Bruhn doesn't even recommend using soap for melons as "soap can be absorbed into the plant tissue". (She advised using just running water and a scrub brush for that.)
