Vacation Recommendation - Sault Ste. Marie, MI

I'm back from a one-week vacation to Sault Ste. Marie, MI. I highly recommend this as a fun family vacation destination. Our kids thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Upper Peninsula. If you are not familiar with Sault Ste. Marie, it lies across the St. Mary's river from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. The St. Mary's river runs between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers runs locks on the river, and HUGE ships pass through the locks many times each day. It is great fun to watch the big lakers go through the locks. Our campground was right on the St. Mary's River, so we had the additional amusement of seeing the ships up close as they were headed to or from the locks.

Hi! We are also homeschoolers and we just learned a little about Sault Ste. Marie when we read "Paddle to the Sea". I considered taking our vacation this year there, but decided to go somewhere a little closer. Do you mind sharing the name of the campground you stayed in? We may try to make the trip next year. Thanks!

We camped at Aune Osborne campground which I believe is owned by the city of Sault Ste. Marie.

I'm currently working on another post about the International Bridge Walk to Canada we did while we were there. If you go next summer, the locks have an "engineers day" or open house on the last Friday in June (?). You get to go in buildings and areas of the locks that are generally closed to the public. Very cool.

We listed to Paddle-to-the-Sea on tape on our way up there.
