Long ago, the Lakes were used for a
variety of reasons including Ice Harvesting and Recreation, including Carnivals and Steam Boat Rides. Babbs
Beach, on Middle Pond, was a popular place to go for swimming,
boating, roller skating, dancing, picnicking, playground and ball
field, and a great snack bar.
The Southwick Historical
Society also has much information about the history of the Congamond
Lakes as well as the surrounding communities. There is a fantastic book available on the subject.
There is another
old pamphlet published in cooperation
with Babbs Beach that dates back to the early 1960's. There is
wealth of historic information and even some aerial photography
in it's pages. Some of the photos date back to early 1900's. The
file is a large one
(7.8 Mb) so it will take a minute or so to load, and it requires
the Adobe Acrobat Reader (.PDF format)
