Co-op City

Robert's contributed 1971 pictures

All of the following pictures and commentary are from Robert; my notes are in the Alt text of the pictures.

He must have mistyped Bellamy for Bartow.

If anybody objects to the use of her likeness, please let me know and we'll do something about it. The kid with the big ears and the groovy haircut doesn't have any say in the matter if he wants to use these pictures. :-)

Here are some very old pictures from my young days in Co-op City.

I remember we had a special costume dance in the Dreiser Loop community center lower level that think was in 1971 when I was in the first grade. The second picture includes the girl I should have been paired with in the dance but I cannot name all the others. Dance outside PS 153 in Dreiser Plaza dance1.jpg

Every once in a while we would have animals on display, this one was in the Bellamy Loop shopping center. Goat BartowZoo.jpg

I remember taking a trip to the Bronx Zoo in 1st grade and taking this picture near the seals but cannot name all of my classmates. Class at Bronx Zoo BxZoo1971.jpg

The sandy play area near building 2 was fun. There were monkey bars and other climing things. I also learned the hard way a few years later that one is not allowed to toss pebbles onto the fiberglass tunnel if one's stature is not a physical threat to co-op city security or else one will be accused of attempting to destroy community property. We had wood paneling on our walls, and rubber Pro Keds sneakers stuck well enough to them that I could climb all the way up to the ceiling. Robert climbing the walls, circa 1975 climbpanel.jpg

When the schools were still being built interesting construction equipmment would come through including this helicoptor I think for some of the ventilation units. Helicopter in what would be NE Bronx Educational Park athletic fields schoolcopter.jpg
