Co-op City

Rochdale Cooperatives in general

Please see http://www.ncb.com/homepage/dayinlife.nsf/index.htm   from which this is taken.
In 1844 as Thoreau was preparing to build a cabin on Walden Pond and the industrial revolution began to urbanize the Western world, 28 workers in northern England formed the first successful cooperative. They were weavers, shoemakers, cabinetmakers, tailors, printers, hatters and engineers.

They called themselves the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society, taking their name from the town they lived in, Rochdale, which is 12 miles north of Manchester.

Co-op City was intended to run on the Rochdale Principles. I haven't found a definitive link to that list yet -- maybe I'll have to visit my local food co-op and copy them down (I'll also get a copy of the twin pines logo)-- they include one vote per person.

One on-web discussion of the Rochdale Principles may be found at the North Coast Co-op site.

The Twin Pines The old Twin Pines logo
drawn anew by CasalsK, http://www.geocities.com/casalsk/coopcity/main83x83.gif are apparently a generic symbol of Rochdale Cooperatives, as discussed on the National Cooperative Business Association site (which is located in the COOP top level domain, how interesting.)

Another common image that appeared in literature promoting cooperation was a cartoon of two donkeys chained together, first straining in opposite directions to reach piles of hay, then joining together, sharing first one pile and then the other.
