William Noud Sr. our first ancestor to arrive in Australia brought with
him his trade as a farrier and blacksmith, marking the beginning of a proud
Noud heritage in the love of horses.

William came from County Kildare, Ireland, which is famous for horse breeding
and racing.  He was the first farrier and blacksmith to settle in Grafton,
New South Wales.

As Grafton grew from a settlement on the Clarence River to a small rural town
it became famous for its racing carnival and now rates as one of the richest
races in rural Australia.

The Nouds' love of horses has remained in their blood for more than four generations.

William NOUD Sr. and his first wife Catherine and family came out to Australia on a ship  "ANNE MILNE",  from Dundee, Scotland 16 Sept 1841 arriving in Sydney, Australia 7 Jan 1842 .
On board ship under William’s protection were Ruth, Anne and
Bridget DALY, William’s sister Margaret NOUD, Catherine’s sister Margaret SCULLY and Mary DELANY.

The sponsor who brought William to
Australia was Robert HOWARTH.
Catherine (SCULLY) NOUD died January 16, 1844
leaving William with an only surviving son from that marriage. William remarried to Elizabeth Jane SULLIVAN on February 03, 1849 and had issue of 10 children to the second marriage.

Nothing much is known of William NOUDS life before immigrating to
Australia from Athy Kildare and some family members believe that the name NOUD may originate from the Netherlands ?,  other NOUDS from Kildare Ireland, area are found in the USA .  Thomas NOUD and his wife Mary (RYAN) NOUD.

Kildare comes from the Irish word CillDara - Church of the Oak Tree, referring to St. Brigid's monastary beneath an oak tree. A unique plain called the Curragh stretches across
County Kildare which is famous for horse-racing and breeding.

Athy, situated in the south of Co. Kildare, is a market town on the convergence of the River Barrow and
Grand Canal . The town is named after a second century chieftain, Ae, who was killed on the river crossing thus giving the town its name the ford of Ae or, in Irish, Baile ÁthaÍ.

This 12th century Anglo-Norman settlement is an attractive market town an important military outpost on the border of the Pale with the16th century
Whites Castle and the magnificent Georgian Court Market house among its many charms. The first town charter dates from the 16th century and the town hall was constructed in the early 18th century The completion of the Grand Canal in 1791 and arrival of the railway in 1846 indicates the importance of Athy as a commercial centre. he Grand Canal and River Barrow navigation converge in the town. The Heritage Centre is situated in the 18th century Town Hall.

FATALITY NEAR ULMARRA
DEATH OF MR. D. McGREGOR
KILLED BY THE CAPSIZE OF A CART.

Ulmarra people were shocked last night to learn a well-known resident, Mr Duncan McGregor, had met with instantaneous death late yesterday afternoon. From particulars gleamed, it appears that the unfortunate man was bringing in a load of firewood to the residence of his son William, at Calliope, about three miles from Ulmarra. He was seated on the top of the load, accompanied by his little grand daughter. When a short distance from his destination the horse took fright and bolted, capsizing the cart and throwing both occupants to the ground amongst the load of wood.
Mrs. W. McGregor, seeing what had happened, hurried to the scene, and found that her little daughter had marvellously escaped injury, although most of her clothing had been torn off her body. She immediately turned her attention to Mr. McGregor and the sight that met her eyes aroused her worst fears. Her screams soon brought help, followed by medical and police assistance. An examination revealed the fact that one of the wheels of the cart had passed over the old gentleman's head, death apparently being instantaneous.

The deceased was 79 years of age, and leaves a large family scattered throughout the district. The remains will be interred in the Ulmarra Cemetery this afternoon, the funeral leaving the residence of Mr. William McGregor, Calliope at 2 o'clock.

Robert William Woolfe
Great great grandson of
William and Elizabeth NOUD

The Daily Examiner
PROFILES OF CHAMPIONS
The achievers

Racing in the bloodlines

Bob Woolfe gained his early riding experience herding and droving cattle around the Woolgoolga District
It served him well as he went on to become one of the top jockeys of the Northern Rivers.
As a schoolboy Bob and good friend Ralph Fetherstone worked the cattle for Ralph's father, popular Woolgoolga butcher Ocky Fetherstone.
That work, backed up with a family history of good horsemen, convinced the youngster that he wanted to be a jockey.
Bob realised his ambition when
Sydney trainer Leo Eaves came to Grafton seeking an apprentice and the schoolkid from Woolgoolga was recommended.    Eaves liked what he saw watching Bob Woolfe on horseback and was also impressed with the young lad's attitude and manners.
He soon had Robert Woolfe indentured and the 15year-old travelled with him back to his Rosehill stables.
Bob learned his trade well under Eaves' tutoring and had ridden a number of placed horses in short time before a serious injury forced him out of racing for several years.
However, the pull of the sport dragged him back into racing, firstly riding trackwork at Rosehill and then returning to Grafton in the early 1960s and he never looked back.
In a shorter than originally intended riding career Bob won two Northern River Racing Association (NRRA) jockeys' premierships - 1961 and 1962 - rode for most of the trainers in the area, in particular  for Percy Eggins, Jim Fletcher and his mother Joan  Fletcher, the Brotherson family and Alberto Tuccori.
He also rode for several visiting trainers from country and metropolitan areas and overall brought in 432 winners.
Included In the win list were numerous Northern Rivers cups. He also served many terms a president of the Northern Rivers Jockeys' Association.
Robert Woolfe was born in Clarence
House Maternity Hospital at South Grafton in July 1938, the son of William (Bill) and Ethel (nee Lee) Woolfe.
He has three sisters-Shirley, Colleen and Mavis- and the family lived at Woolgoolga where their father drove busses and cream trucks for prominent Woolgoolga businessman, Jim Jones.
Bob had his primary and secondary education at Woolgoolga public schools where the main sports he was involved in were rugby league and tennis.
"My grandfather, Bill Lee, was a good sportsman excelling in horsemanship, swimming, running and football and twice making boat trips to Sydney in representative teams to play Rugby League Country Week matches in the city," Bob said
He was a very fast runner and because of it was given the nick name of ' Cyclone' Lee.
I had the urge to be a good horseman like he was but more particularly and because I was not big, to be a jockey and a good one.
My chance came when Leo Eaves came to Grafton looking for an apprentice and I was recommended and got the job."
Leo was no newcomer to the
North Coast having been raised in the area and had driven horse drawn passenger coaches around the district including the last Cobb and Co coach from Grafton to Coffs Harbour .     With that mode of transport phased out
Leo moved to
Sydney and took out a trainers licence and had horse stalls at the Rosehill track.
For a while it was trackwork and work around the horse stalls for Bob, but it wasn't long before Eaves gave him his first race ride.
That was on July 17, 195,1, legging the 16 year old apprentice onto the jet black horse, Dark Hue in the six furlong (1200m) Parramatta Stakes at Rosehill, Dark Hua finished second to a smart galloper to Cassiebawn and Woolfe's competent handling off his mount did not go  unnoticed with each of the Sydney newspapers giving mention of the good first-up ride
The journalists also noted that Bob Woolfe, at four feet nine inches (145cms) and five stone six pounds (34.5kg),was the smallest apprentice jockey in Sydney.
Also, Eaves had to help with taking the saddle and lead bag off the horse with the bag itself weighing containing 29lbs (3kms) of lead or more than a third of the rider's weight.
Bob had ridden Dark Hue in a barrier trial the day before under the watchful eyes of stewards to gain his rider's licence.
The ex-Woolgoolga lad had 25 rides in Sydney
for, three seconds and two thirds including a third in the 1954 Canterbury Cup on the Eaves-prepared Volther to the Neville Sellwood ridden Cassiebawn.
That was before the accident which was to keep him out of racing for such a long period It happened on
April 14, 1955 when his mount, 'Captain Cox, came down in trackwork hurling Woolfe heavily to the ground.
As a result Bob lost a kidney and spleen and spent three-and aq half months in hospital and was told his racing career was over.
After a while Bob took up a job with the Navva Stud Farm at Grosse Wold near
Richmond and situated at the junction of the Hawkesbury and the Grosse Rivers .
  The farm bred
hereford , and friesian cattle of the highest quality, winning numerous trophies at shows around Australia including many at the Sydney Royal Easter Show," Bob said.
"We grew all our own feed and my job was helping in this department but more particularly in getting the cattle ready for display.
There was such success that the property was known as "The Show Farm of Australia'.
"I worked there for three year's but the urge, to back into racing was strong and one day I went down to Rosehill looking for trackwork and I was given two horses to put through their paces."
Bob mentioned that he would be coming back to Grafton for a holiday during the July Carnival and one of Sydney's leading trainers, Maurie Anderson, asked him if he would handle some of the trackwork for the string of horses he was taking' to the Jacaranda City.
"While I was in Grafton local trainer Percy Eggins got me to sort out a couple of his horses that had been presenting problems," Bob said.
He then suggested I should remain in Grafton and ride far his stable.
"However, l returned to
Sydney and took up a job as a truck driver and lasted at that for six months before I decided to return home and take up Percy's offer. I have never regretted it.
"Percy was a tinsmith by trade, a fine horse trainer and a real charactor.
"If he had a horse in a race he would take a position outside the fence near the half furlong mark and when the horses came around the bend he would start running and be adjacent to the winning post to watch them finish.
"He would then pop a heart pill.
"I owe a lot to Percy and I hope I repaid him by riding plenty of winners for his stable."
Bob had his first race ride back from the long lay-off on the Percy Eggins-trained, Bernie Carlton owned High Marie and it won, taking out a five furlongs (1000m) lmprovers Handicap at the Grafton track.
The wins began to flow in with Bob getting mounts from virtually every local trainer as well as a number from other centres leading to the two Northern Rivers premierships.
It was in 1961 that Bob married South-Grafton girl Irene Duroux at St Patrick's Church.
There were two sons from the marriage, Daryl and Shane.
Tragically Shane lost his life as a teenager 20 years ago when the motor bike he was riding was struck by car at a
Grafton street intersection.
Daryl was apprenticed for a while as a jockey but increasing weight forced an early retirement.
He has since been one of the major figures In Karl (Go Karts) racing and is a talented Indoor cricketer and is an area representative with the Grafton Over-40s team.
Bob remembers with affection some of the top horses he rode on Northern Rivers tracks during his career which lasted until 1976 when injury once more took Its toll.
The Brotherson family-owned and Jim Brotherson- trained Orara Rliver would be at the forefront.
Bob rode the gelding in 48 races for 12 wins, 12 seconds and 12 thirds.
   Overall in its racing days,
Orara River
won 12 cups and Bob was the rider for five of them with a Casino Cup and two Orara and two Licenced Victualler's (AHA) cups Bob also won a Coffs Harbour Cup on another of the Brotherson gallopers, Liberator's Gift.
There are four other local horses that stand out in his mind  the grand mare Suzuki, owned by Noel Hall and trained by Kirk Creasey, High Buck owned by Bill Dougherty and Joan Fletcher and trained by Joan; Civet, a horse Bill and Peter Dougherty and their father Tony bought off Les Fox; and the Bob Moore trained multi-winner Nick's Risque.
"l rode all the trackwork on Civet and in fact I was the trainer too. We won 14 races with him including seven in a row at one stage," Bob said.
One July Bill Dougherty and Joan Fletcher decided to give High Back a start in the. Grafton Cup and Bob wasted around 7lbs (3kg) to ride him at 1lb overweight at 7st8lbs.
However, when cup day came along there was a big downpour.  High Buck did not like rain or  wet track and it took considerable time and effort to even coax him out of his stall.
He finally did make it to the course and despite not handling the track still managed to beat a couple home.
There is one particular part in his riding career Bob would prefer to forget.
A battery was found on course one afternoon after racing and stewards. although declaring Woolfe had not used it, told him they believed he knew who did.
Bob denied any such knowledge but regardless, stewards, to the amazement of racegoers and Local and Sydney journalists, handed out a life suspension.
On appeal the life suspension was removed and replaced with a 20 pounds ($40) fine.
  A trackwork accident on
April 22 1976 ended his race riding career
"1 was lucky to be alive with the fall smashing my remaining kidney along with six vertebrae and small bowel," Bob said.
   "I spent two days in
Grafton Base Hospital and four weeks in Sydney under specialist care."
After some time Bob took out a trainer's licence but gave it away after 12 months.
For the past 20 years Bob has been the handyman at the Clarence Nursing Home, working mainly on the homes lawns, gardens and his expertise has been to the fore twice winning
Jacaranda Garden prizes.
He has worked in similar vogue at Livingston House and Dougherty Villa and has won a Grafton Tidy Towns committee award at each.
"But age is catching up on me pushing mowers," Bob said.

The above mentioned Bill Lee (aka), Cyclone' Lee Married Rebecca Margaret McGregor, daughter of Duncan McGregor and Anne Noud.
Percy Eggins married Lily Irene Fernance daughter of Aaron Fernance & Rose Lilian Lee, Bill Lee and Rose were first cousins

Robert's son, Daryl, also trained and won races as an apprentice but eventually grew too big to continue his apprenticeship.
Shane, another of Robert's sons, was interested in becoming a race caller and used to go into the box with the race-caller. His young life was cut short in a motorcycle accident on October 19, 1982.

Gary Thomas Kennedy, a great-great-grandson of William and Elizabeth NOUD and great-grandson of Anne NOUD and Duncan McGregor, left Lismore at about the age of 15 years for a jockey apprenticeship at the Randwick Race Course in Sydney, NSW, but never completed the apprenticeship.

Grafton is famous for its July racing carnival
that draws many of the best horses and jockeys in Australia
and the Grafton Cup rates as one of the richest purses in rural Australia.

We drove on to Mr. Burke’s stud farm of five thousand acres.  It is a beautiful block of country consisting of open downs and forest.  The home and yards are well sheltered by surrounding hills.  Mr. Tom Taylor, who manages all Mr. Bourke’s country properties, was away but we were met by Miss Frances Taylor.  The farm is called Pride of the Valley Farm.  I don’t know if I am correct or not, but would bet Nonpareil against one of Burke’s best that it was called after the young lady who met us.  I did not see the sires Ben Thor, or Young Orcus, but a nice lot of youngsters were rounded up by Misses Frances and Emma Taylor.  They are a good lot and are in splendid condition.  Jack Kelly, who was for some years with William NOUD, is the stud groom, and he had feeding a nice eighteen months old cold in Zilpershight, by Zilpher, from Foresight.  Another was a half brother to Afterthought.  This young one is named Thorthought, by Ben Thor.  Another was a four year old that looked in the pink of racing condition.  This was Merrythor, by Ben Thor, from Friar’s Folly.  He is  a half brother to Merry Plane.  He should be heard of early.  Pride of the Valley also fattens cattle and carries a few sheep.  In ordinary seasons the feed for stock is grown on the place.  Other properties of the Burke family, in charge of Mr. Taylor are Riverstone, Meteor Park, and Sonthlea, in all approximately 60,000 acres.

Mr Michael Noud  has advised the Headmaster of his decision to accept another appointment next year. Mr Noud will teach PDHPE and be Sportsmaster for the Years 5&6 classes at St Ignatius’ College, Riverview as from the beginning of 2003. Mr Noud’s work at Lindfield has been characterised by a passion for the personal development, health and physical welfare of our students, considerable organisational skill and persistent cheerful-ness and we will miss his encouraging presence very much indeed. Mr James Martin (presently Yr2 class teacher) has accepted my invitation to assume Mr Noud’s role next year.

Bette NOUD
One Nation supporter.
Bette Noud, who has been driving more than one-and-a-half hours into the city most days to follow the case.
For former One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, it's a case of from political hurricane to jailed criminal. Her fall from grace is now complete. She and her One Nation co-founder, David Ettridge, are in custody after being found guilty in the District Court in Brisbane of fraudulently registering their party in 1997.

Travelers Digest toured Australia for several months starting in June 2002, and I must say that we were totally impressed. This country, as far as I am concerned, is one that everyone must visit at least once in their lifetime. It is diverse, multicultural, vast, and friendly. It contains huge rainforests, awe- inspiring beaches, hundreds of tropical islands and great cities. Away from the coastal areas lies a great desert called The Outback - a suitable name to be sure.

Just 300 kilometers west of the fair city of Brisbane, in the Columboola region, is Miles, a tiny town in the heart of kangaroo country. The town itself is not much more than a wide spot on the road, but there lives some very lively sorts: men, like their forefathers, who tamed this rugged land. Hard working, hard drinking men with lots of character who still manage to maintain their kind spirit. One such man is David Gold, who makes his living doing the thing he loves most....hunting!

Hello! My name is Mike Smith. I am the touring editor for Travelers Digest. My crew and I travel the globe seeking adventure. While we were planning our tour to Australia, I contacted David through his website to find out about hunting safaris. I had spent a great deal of time as a young man reading about Australia and and felt a connection to the Australians way of life. The outdoors was a big part of my life and when it came to hunting, I was a Texan and was raised to be comfortable with a rifle.

We had been touring all over the Pacific and after spending a month touring around Australia, we finally arrived in Brisbane. After a few days exploring this fine city, built around several rivers, we took the four-and-a- half hour drive west into The Outback. The ever-changing landscape kept me occupied and offered hundreds of photo opportunities. Late in the day we arrived in Miles. After downing a Coke in a small roadside store, I called David on his cell phone and was looking at postcards when he walked in. I had never met David before and thought he was the store clerk when he spoke to me. Only three minutes had passed since I had called him. Very small town! David was polite and warm. Have you ever met a man that you instantly liked? Luckily, I have met a few, and David was one. I liked him the moment I met him.

He had arranged for us to stay with an associate who owned and operated a large ranch. He gave us the directions, we shook hands, and he said that he would meet with us later in the day. Good deal! We were anxious to unwind and would catch up with him over some supper back in town. In a while, we reached the cut off sign and followed it toward the ranch. The small lane off the highway was secluded and kangaroos were bouncing along everywhere. Not knowing that he had called to inform his friend of our approximate time of arrival, we spent two hours snapping photos and true to our nature...arrived late. Shooting photos in Australia can become quite habit forming...believe me!

The ranch was owned and operated by Lindsay Noud, a man with calloused hands and a gentle heart, who had pretty much built the ranch by himself. There were little unmarked lanes running all through the land, each heading off to a private cabin. I might add that each one was strongly built from native trees found on his own property. The cabin was huge and surprisingly well furnished. The kitchen had all the fixings for several days of caffeine, coffee and tea. Nice!

Later in the afternoon, feeling almost starved, we met David in a roadside restaurant back in Miles. After a good dinner and then a few drinks in the local pub, we agreed on a time to go on our first hunt. It would be the following night, giving us time to unwind and familiarize ourselves with the area. I was fortunate to have been traveling with my best friend, my son and we were to be ready just after dark. Our third comrade, a usually very adventurous lady assistant, wanted no part in being in the wilderness after dark with three armed men.... she was obviously the sane one!

The next day, we had a home-cooked breakfast provided by Lindsay, our host, and then spent the rest of the day hiking along the river. The forest and the surrounding land were covered in trees and other outback vegetation. Walking along the river, mostly dry due to a drought, was an adventure in itself. As we climbed over and around large rocks and in and out of small canyons, we were entertained by enchanting, yet unfamiliar, songs from some Australian birds. Heading back before dark, Lindsay called us to a great supper of steak and vegetables that he prepared himself. Looking at Lindsay with his burly demeanor, one couldn't imagine him with an apron, but there he was.... what a good fellow!

David arrived, enjoyed the meal, and made quiet conversation with us, after which it was time to pack ourselves into his four wheel drive truck and hit the bush. This night, we were to hunt kangaroos, which are plentiful and actually so numerous as to become pests at times. The night was filled with anticipation and energy. David knew the area well and soon led us to a secluded field with several large animals. They are not easy to hunt to say the least. They can move like a horse and jump like a frog. About the time you think you have a shot...."boing" they're gone. It was the most exciting hunt I can remember. Your skill level and your hand/eye coordination, as well as your night vision, were tested to the max. It was a great night. In a matter of a few minutes, I shot two of them and then had the favor of kicking back and watching David skillfully clean and prepare the meat. I could tell that he was a nature born and skilled hunter and even though I was unfamiliar with the surroundings, felt comfortable in his company. The entire scene was unforgettable...the dark, the wild animals, the mystery of being here in the great outback.... it all just felt right!

The next day was spent similar to the first, but we did get to do some target practice with Lindsay's small caliber rifle. Somehow, though never having been to the outback before, we all felt connected to this inspiring land and even to the wild, unfamiliar birds with their deep and haunting melodies. Our experience on the ranch with Lindsay and hunting with David was phenomenal and even after only the first night, knew it would be embedded in my memories for life.

The second night of hunting was even greater. On this night we were to go after wild hogs...boars! Those unpredictable critters with the large and dangerous tusks...now....that's hunting! We drove for about an hour and after a few more minutes of driving through a field of sweet sorghum, we spotted two large hogs. These creatures are extremely intelligent and don't just stand around passively while being shot. They scatter, run for miles at times and at the least, drop to the ground, so as to foil your shot. Here we were, staring up at a blanket of stars under an Australian night sky, rifle in hand and hunting some of the most dangerous animals in the world....What could be more exciting? As we had pulled up, I spotted the precise area where the two large hogs hit the ground and immediately drew a bead and fired one round. The 223 caliber bullet hit the larger hog directly in the ear. The shot was from over a hundred yards at least. All of this took place within three minutes. The first hog dead, we then turned our attentions on the second. David had by this time, released his two attack dogs and they were in the hunt. Their deep growling and thrashing could be heard in the near distance. They quickly made the tackle. The dogs were well trained and obedient. It took them less than four minutes to pin down the 240-lb. hog. The three of us ran to where we heard the hog snarling. The two pit bulls had a secure grip on the hog's throat and rear legs and I then placed my booted foot on its neck. I squeezed a 20 gauge slug into its head, slightly behind the ear and the hog went quiet, not feeling anything. Again, as before, David hoisted the hogs onto the back of his truck with a small pulley and began the cleaning process. I held the light, my son watched and the dogs, being put back into their cages, fell asleep, their work being completed. The experiences, the sights and the sounds made this another night to remember. My senses are still reeling from the memories.

Back at the cabin, lying in the bunk under the warmth of the quilted covers, I relived each moment. The nights visions had refreshed my own many treasured memories and with them all swimming in my head, I fell fast asleep. The cool breeze and the sweet song of night birds was the winning combination to grant me the peace and serenity allowing me to enjoy a restful night's sleep in the wild Australian outback.

We stayed with Lindsay on his Columboola Country ranch for three glorious days and will never forget him or the land he married. With Lindsay's great cooking, the stimulating atmosphere of being on his bush ranch and with David Gold spearheading you on a great hunting safaris...you are in for the time of your life. Say hi from Mike Smith and they'll treat you to some beer and kangaroo stew.

To everyone...young or old....get to Australia, have the ultimate adventure with our good friends in the Columboola Country and revitalize the bushman deep within you. Do it for yourself!

An absolute must do and see while you travel through this magical land and remember, when you're in Australia, it's...."No worries mate!"

Australian Emigrants
Wild stormy ocean winds bashing the sails,
Across the crystal clear blue ocean they came.
The narrow ways of English gentry
were not for such as them and forced upon them to leave.
Smallpox raged among passengers and crew until the dead were buried at sea.
They buried their dead in the washing of the waves,
No giant tombstones upon those lonely ocean graves.
Transfixed they stand and watched the tireless ocean taking their loved ones to lonely graves into immeasurable depth as the wave's white, salty foam spray covers them like a blanket taking them to their watery graves.
Fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers
are buried in these watery graves.
They buried them there where no mortal can see.
The oceans are blamed for many ships passengers and crews laying to rest in the deep and dark silent depths of the ocean floor far away from the Australian shore.
For week after week, they saw no land, then on the horizon came Sydney Cove Port. Their stories will unfold in the Captain's log of ancestral lands they left to call this new land,
Australia their home.
The eager kangaroo pricks his ears and lifts his head on high. Who be this that approaches on my land it's not the aboriginal man.
What are these mammals they bring to graze my land?
Men in Chains, religion and famine have brought them here.
They drifted to the outback and found the land of mud and track from bullock drays and men on horseback.
The untouched land had to be cleared for farming of their corn and potatoes and grazing of their cattle in this land of heat and drought, of mountain ranges, of vast plains and of torrential flooding rains.
But time and toil have marked their path in
Australia's two hundred years past.
Their names now written upon a stone, remind us of so long ago of
Australia's emigrant past.
