Shot and killed by drug smuggler Grafton Daily Examiner -Thursday 25th February 1915 DISTRICT NEWS Mid-Clarence For some time past vague rumours have been in circulation to the effect that Mr. Roy Noud, son of Mr. and Mrs T Noud of Ulmarra, hadmet his death by foul means in China but up until this week his parents had heard nothing to confirm the startling rumours. A cablegram, however was received on Monday night from another brother of the unfortunate young man briefly announcing his death. No particulars were given. From information received from another source it is understood that the deceased met his death in a violent manner at the hands of the Chinese at Macao in China in December last. The first information that anything was amis was received by a friend who had been in the habit of writing to the deceased but whose letter was returned by the postal authorities with the intimation on the envelope that the addressee had been killed. It is most difficult to understand the delay which has taken place in conveying the sad news to the deceased parents. The late Mr. Noud, who was scarcely 23 years of age, left Ulmarra upwards of four years ago, eventually proceeding to China, where he secured a lucrative position in the Imperial Chinese Customs Department at Macao. The greatest sympathy is expressed on all sides with the afflicted parents and family in their sad loss. Grafton Daily Examiner - Saturday 6th March 1915 DISTRICT NEWS Mid-Clarence The Late Mr. R. Noud In a recent issue we published the fact that a brief cable from China conveyed the sad intelligence that Mr Ray Noud, son of Mr T. Noud, of Ulmarra, had met an untimely death at the hands of the Chinese. Mrs Noud this week received full details of the tragedy from her other son. Mr. Thos. Noud, who is also in China. The letter also clears up the mystery regarding the time which elapsed after Mr. Noud's death before his parents received any intimation thereof. Mr. T. Noud, in his letter, explains that as no material information could be given by cable it was decided to write. He gave a touching account of the tragedy. He says, inter alias "I will never forget the shock the cable gave me. I was in a room full of friends laughing and happy when I was handed the news that poor Roy was dead and buried at Macao...It appears that he with another young Australian named Cross were rather anxious to try and catch some rice smugglers, and , unfortunately suceeded. They went a roundabout way to achiev their object and whilst they were onboard talking to the Chinese one of the crew suddenly produced a revolver and shot Cross in the head, and as he fell kicked him overboard. Roy rushed to his assistance, but one of the crew shot him through the brain. When this happened the junk was still tied alongside of the embankment and Cross who was alive but unconscious, fell on dry land. The sight of blood further excited the Chinese and they fired two more shots at Cross, one shot breaking his leg and the other entering his stomach. He was still suffering greatly. All this happened during the early hours of the morning, and when the bodies were found the junk had disappeared and if they search till the Day of Judgement they will never find out who committed the crime. I cannot understand what made the Chinese do this as it is only the second or third time they have ever attempted the life of a foreigner. I have on many occassions caught these smugglers at all hours of the night and not once have they ever shown fight. Poor Boy was buried in Macao on January 5, his coffin being carried to the cemetery by his fellow officers and he is now resting in the nicest part of Macao. His affairs have been taken in hand by the British Consulate-General of Canton. Born in Townsville in Queensland, Cropp has been involved with horses all of his life. His father, the late Fred Cropp, was a jockey and trainer and he had two uncles who were also jockeys. Cropp also became a jockey himself and rode his first winner as a 12-year-old apprentice at a meeting at Kilcoy in Queensland. He moved to New Zealand in the early 1950s and was successful aboard Brown Jester (NZ) (Felous x Droll) in the 1954 Wanganui Steeplechase at Wanganui. He also rode the winner of the Winter Hurdles at Trentham. Cropp has always wanted to take a horse back to Brisbane to race and is hoping to achieve that ambition with Bulginbaah. Bulginbaah is named after the first winner of the Tattersall's Cup in Sydney who was trained by Cropp's great-grandfather, Bill Noud. Noud's son, Bill Jr, a leading trainer in Queensland, also named his property Bulginbaah. Bulginbaah was bred by Cropp who borrowed his dam, 3 race winner Lady Tristimus (NZ) (Tristimus x Gyspy Jo by Frontal), to send to AJC Derby winner, Starjo (NZ) (Star Way x Ali Jo by Trictrac). FIELD REPORT SOUTH AFRICAN CHRISTIAN MISSION OCTOBER - MARCH 2003 ...  In January 2003, Bob Snyder and Roberta Noud flew to the Cape. During many visits  with them in Coldwater (MI), they had made it known that they wished to marry on top  of Table Mountain. Their visit was for two weeks - Bob had assisted with the  construction of the roof in Hermanus previously. His welcome there was heartfelt and  spontaneous. They also visited the Elsies River church, Ntobie and others. One calm  summer evening, a few days before they returned, I married them on top of Table  Mountain just at sunset. Obituaries Haley, Tom Ed Sr. Willis, MI Age 69, passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at University Hospital from cancer. He was born March 20, 1935 in Montgomery, TN, the son of Marion A. and Sallie (Murry) Haley. On July 8, 1955, he married Barbara A. O’Bryan in Springfield, TN and she survives. Tom worked for General Motors Willow Run plant until he retired in December of 1995. He was a member of York Baptist Church of Milan. In addition to his wife, survivors include - four children, Belinda (Terry) Leonard, Cynthia Young, Tom (Sandy) Haley Jr. and Sally (Lonnie) Noud; seven grandchildren, Brianne (Kevin), Neal, Chelsea, Thomas, Bryan, Matthew and Joshua; seven sisters, Addie Waldrop of TN, Marie Hogue of PA, Minnie (Estill) Johnson of KY, Peggy (James) Hicks of KY, Mary (Smitty) Burnette of MI, Fay (Thomas) Schmittou of MI and Anna (Ned) Lawson of MI; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Marsho Young, four sisters and three brothers. The funeral service will be 1 -00 P.M. Onaga Herald July 28, 1966 Services Were Tuesday for Cathleen Noud, 59 Services were at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Lillis for Mrs. Cathleen Noud, 59, Mrs. Noud passed away Sunday morning on Community Hospital here after an illness of more than a year. Interment was in the church cemetery. She was born June 22, 1907 near Lillis and spent most of her life in the Lillis community. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Mr. James William Preston Preston, 70, James William of Jacksonville died Tuesday morning, March 27, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born on October 31, 1930 in Jacksonville the son of Henry Morris and Ruby Pearl Burchell Preston. He married Edith Erlene Clark on October 4, 1955 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and she preceded him in death on December 20, 1997. He is survived by one daughter, Sherie (husband, Bill) Dugan of Port St. John, Florida; five sons, Randy (wife, Star) Preston of Titusville, Florida, Samuel (fiance, Karie Noud) Preston of Bethalto, and Nickie (wife, Susan) Preston, Tim Preston, and William (wife, Sarah) Preston, all of Jacksonville; eight grandchildren, and one sister, Elnora “Judy” Preston of Jacksonville Mr. Preston was a steel fabricator at Birdco Fabricators. "Arnie" Krause, 78, of Winnebago died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2005, in Neighbors Nursing Home in Byron after a lengthy illness. Born March 8, 1926, in Rockford, the son of Albert and Mathilda (Jungerberg) Krause. Attended Rockford West High School and then Winnebago High School. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Marines from 1944 to 1946. Arnie married Pauline Raver on Oct. 26, 1946, in Rockford. He was a craftsman carpenter for more than 55 years, and passed the craft onto his sons. Arnie was a member of Winnebago United Methodist Church, and a die-hard Cubs fan. Surviving family: his wife, Pauline Krause of Winnebago; sons, Randall "Randy" (Sandra) Krause of Winnebago and Deryl Krause of Rockford; son-in-law, Ken Zilka of Winnebago; grandchildren, Gregory, Jeffrey (Diane Overall), Michael (Kacy) and Debra (Jody Gilligan) Krause, Samantha (Rob) Peter, Toni (Keith) Wright, Todd and Nicholas Zilka, Nancy (Jeff) Noud, Jessica (Alan Heisler) and Rachel Krause; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Hamen of Winnebago, Mable (Jacob) Callahan and Leona Krause, both of Rockford; numerous nieces and nephews.
