MANISTEE COUNTY MICHIGAN SURNAMES
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mimanist/ManSurPubWks.html

   Patrick Noud

In the life of this successful business man of Manistee are illustrated the results of perseverance and energy, coupled with judicious management and strict integrity. He is a citizen of whom any community might well be proud, and the people of this locality, fully appreciating his ability, accord him a place in the foremost rank of representative business men. His life shows what may be accomplished by energy and determination, even if the outlook is discouraging at first. Few have had so many obstacles to overcome as had he in starting out for himself. For years he struggled against adverse circumstances, at times unable to secure work, and at other times unable to secure the pay for the work he had done; but at last prosperity rewarded his efforts, and he is now President of the State Lumber Company, and one of the most influential business men in Manistee.

Both the paternal and maternal ancestors of Mr. Noud were of Irish lineage. He was born in Anprior, Ontario, Canada, January 19, 1845, and was the eldest of four children comprising the family of Thomas and Mary (Ryan) Noud, natives of Ireland. His mother died when he was nine, and his father three years later, after which his sister was taken into the home of an aunt in Montreal, and the other children were reared by their grandfather Ryan. In his home Patrick remained until twenty years of age, after which he came to the States, his objective point being Traverse City, Mich., where he had an acquaintance. On reaching Detroit, Mr. Noud had but $7.00, and with this bought a ticket to Northport, in order to be sure of reaching the northern portion of the state. He arrived in Traverse City penniless. His first work was for five hours at the rate of twenty cents per day. He then walked to Elk Rapids, hoping to secure a position with Dexter & Noble, but found them discharging instead of hiring men. Accordingly he returned to Elk Rapids, where he left his trunk for his board bill. A long walk to Traverse city proved fruitless, and, getting no work, he with two other men walked to a camp on Manistee River, thirty miles from the city of that name. It seemed as if fortune had at last smiled upon him, for he secured work and continued there all winter. However, when he endeavored to secure his wages June 1, he was unable to get a cent, the firm having gone away and left him in the lurch. The only compensation he ever received for his work was his board and a plug of tobacco. When spring came, and his efforts to secure his money proved unavailing, he once more started out in search of work.

In a mill at the head of the Manistee River, Mr. Noud finally secured a position, but after a week he hired out to a contractor as a log driver. His employer did not tell him what his wages were to be, but after working for three months he received $2 per day, or $156 for the summer, this being the highest wages paid. In log rolling he became an expert, and in fact became familiar with every detail connected with the lumber business.

In company with three gentlemen (all of whom are now deceased), Mr. Noud took a contract for getting out squared timber. This work consumed four months, the profits being $4 per day. He then entered the employ of William Magoon, who paid him $30 a month for cutting sawlogs. After one winter thus spent, he was promoted to the position of foreman of the camp, receiving $45 per month, and having twenty men under him. In the fall of the same year Mr. Magoon formed a partnership with R.G. Peters, and Mr. Noud became their foreman at $52 per month, having control of sixty men. In this capacity he was employed for two years.

Two years later Mr. Peters offered our subject a contract in the North, and while going tither, riding a mustang pony, he was run over by a load of logs in a ravine. His limb was badly crushed, and from the result of his injuries he was incapacitated for active work for three months. The accident occurred twenty-five miles from Manistee and he was brought to this city, where he remained until his recovery. As soon as able to work, he accepted a position as foreman for S.D. Clarke, of Chicago, on Portage Lake, where he was at the head of thirty men for three months. According to the contract, he was to receive $100 per month, but Clarke assigned and the men were refused payment. A lawyer was consulted, who stated that if the timber could be prevented from being stamped, in the spring it could be attached. On receiving this counsel, Mr. Noud returned to the camp and secured the stamp of the scaler. This he threw into Portage Lake, thereby preventing the stamping of the timber. The following spring, when the company refused payment, they were informed of the condition of the matter, and soon settled in full with Mr. Noud and his men.

Returning to the employ of R.G. Peters, our subject was engaged as foreman for six months. In 1873 he took a contract to put in thirty million feet of timber, which required his attention until 1877, and brought him $16,000 clear. His next position was that of Superintendent for Mr. Peters, which gave him the control of about one hundred and sixty men and the supervision of all the logging work. During the five years he held the position, he received $5 per day and expenses. In 1879 he formed a partnership with Thomas Kenny, which continued for five years. In 1881 he also became connected with the firm of Davis, Blacker & Co.,and built the sawmill now owned by the State Lumber Company, the latter having been organized by Messrs. Blacker, Noud & Dempsey each with one-third interest in the concern. Since the expiration of the contract with Mr. Peters, much of the time of Mr. Noud has been given to the affairs of the State Lumber Company, and to the towing and sorting of logs in connection with Mr. Kenny, and recently he has succeeded to the former lumbering business of John C. Pomeroy. He is also President of the Manistee Liquor Company, a wholesale concern.

The State Lumber Company furnishes employment to about three hundred men in the mill, and one hundred and fifty men in their camps in the woods. The plant has a capacity of twenty millions during the navigation season of about eight months, and there is a salt block with a daily capacity of one thousand barrels. The products are shipped largely by lake, though the railroads are used to some extent. To this concern, of which he is president, Mr. Noud gives his entire time, and the enterprise has proved quite renumerative.

September 5, 1870, Mr. Noud was united in marriage with Miss Susan Agnes McCurdy, a native of Canada. They are the parents of the following named children: Mary Georgiana, Thomas James, John Francis, Bernard Daniel, Arthur Joseph (who died at five years of age), Maud Alice, Walter A. and Reuben Patrick. The family is connected with the Guardian Angels Catholic Church. They are building a pleasant residence on the corner of Second and Maple Streets, where they will entertain their friends with gracious hospitality.

THE NOUD HOME: 202 Maple St. Patrick Noud had this home designed by the nationally famous “Chicago School” architects Holabird and Roche.  Built in 1894-1895 of red brick, the three story home in the Colonial Revival style has recently been carefully restored.

Politically a Democrat, Mr. Noud has served several terms as Alderman, and was Mayor in 1891-92. During his incumbency of the latter position the electric street railroad was built, and the new Smith Street Bridge projected. About that time some opposition arose in the Council, and the Mayor found it necessary to remove certain officials, including the City Attorney and the Chief of the Fire Department. His ability as a manager was here abundantly

proved, for he succeeded in carrying his point and in securing the appointment of his candidates. In many ways he has contributed to the material growth of Manistee, and may justly be numbered among the most efficient business men and progressive citizens of the place.

BIOGRAPHIES OF
VAN BUREN CITIZENS

John Francis. Noud.- With the splendid record of his father as a manufacturer, business man and public spirited and progressive citizen before him, John F. Noud, of South Haven, began his own responsibility of living up to it and holding the family name at least at the altitude at which his father had written it.  It is high praise but only a just tribute to genuine and demonstrated merit to state that the son has fully lived up to the example of his father and dignified and adorned the name he bears as worthily in his generation as his father did in his; and it is to his credit that he has been as ready in adaptation to the requirements of his day, much intensified as they are in exaction, his father or any other member of his family ever was.
Mr. Noud was born in Manistee county, Michigan, on September 29, 1876, a son of Patrick and Susan A. (McCurdy) Noud, and the third of their eight children, six of whom are living.  The father was born in Canada and became a resident of the United States and Michigan when he was yet a young man.  For a time after his arrival in this state he worked as an employee at lumbering, and when he got a start engaged in the lumber trade in Manistee on his own account, operating a saw mill and carrying on a general lumber business.  He was one of the pioneers in that part of the state in this line of industrial and mercantile effort, and one of the most prominent men engaged in it there. He is now and has been for several years president of the State Lumber Company of Manistee.  This company is also engaged in the manufacture of salt.  He is also president of the Chicago and South Haven Steamship Company.  In all his business undertakings he was highly successful, and in this connection with the public affairs of the city and county in which he lived he was also prominent and influential.  His political connection was with the Democratic party, and in the local councils of that organization he was one of the most potential forces, being recognized as a judicious and reliable advisor and a resourceful and effective worker for the good of the party, while everything involving the substantial welfare of the city and county felt the quickening impulse of his vigorous mind and the directing care of his strong and skillful hand greatly to its advantage.
His son John Francis. Noud, was educated in the schools of Manistee, and for some years after completing their course of instruction was associated in business with his father.  On November 21, 1900, he began business for himself as a retail lumber merchant in South Haven in association with Joseph F. Smith, the firm being Noud & Smith.  The partnership continued until late in 1901, when Mr. Noud bought Mr. Smith's interest in the business and started it anew under the name of the John F. Noud Company.  Under this name Mr. Noud has been conducting the enterprise ever since with a steadily increasing volume of trade and an ascending rank and reputation as a merchant and business man in general, being esteemed as a leader by both the trade and the general public throughout this part of the country.
Mr. Noud has also been active in city affairs and one of the awaking and stimulating forces in connection with them.  He served as alderman from the First ward four years, giving the people excellent service as a city official, and for many years has been zealous in promoting every undertaking of value for their benefit, mentally, morally and materially.  His duty as a citizen is never neglected or given half-hearted attention, whatever the issue, whether political, business or social matters, and it is always performed with conscience and an effectiveness that indicates elevated manhood and a deep sense of personal responsibility for general conditions and the results of every agitation for their betterment.
His political support is given to the Republican party, but he is not a hide-bound partisan, and he never allows party considerations to overbear local needs with him.  Fraternally he is a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, holding his membership in Benton Harbor Lodge, No. 544, and a Knight of Columbus, belonging to Benton Harbor Council, No. 1120.  He is zealous in his devotion to these fraternities and energetic and helpful in the work of the lodge and council in them which he belongs.
Mr. Noud was married on April 21, 1902, to Miss Alma M. Schaab, a native of Manistee and the daughter of John and Rose (Wise) Schaab.  Five children have been born of the union, three of whom are living: Francis Patrick, J. Bernard and Roger William.  Katherine, the second child, died in infancy, and Robert T., the fourth, at the age of two years.  The parents are warmly welcomed in all desirable social circles, and regarded as valuable additions to any.  They are genial and companionable, making association with them highly agreeable, and their advanced culture and lofty ideals win them the admiration of all who come in contact with them and aid extensively in keeping up the standard of citizenship in their community, of which they are such creditable representatives.

Harness horse a Saratoga star with help from Peasleeville family
By SUZANNE MOORE Staff Writer
SARATOGA SPRINGS - Two months' stall rest.
If the 4-year-old pacer would ever race again, that's what he'd need, the veterinarian told Melissa and Dave Goodrich and their daughter, Mary Gast.
The news at first hit the Peasleeville natives like a hammer blow. The bay gelding had just started showing promise on the track.
"There went all our hopes, all the work we'd done," Melissa said.
An American standardbred is a high-strung animal; even with a cracked pastern bone in the left hind ankle, it doesn't generally take to such inactivity.
But Star of Paradise - "Parry" to his family - isn't the typical racehorse.
"He never kicked the walls, never chewed," Melissa said.
"It's really strange because it just seemed like he knew he had to behave," Mary said.
"Once I saw what a terrific patient he was, I was confident he would heal."
AUCTION BARGAIN
Oddly enough, it had been the horse's stall manners - not potential speed - that had prompted his purchase three years earlier.
Always horse crazy, Melissa had grown up influenced by her mother, Alice Wright, who brought her brood to the thoroughbred track many times as spectators.
In 1971, Melissa and her horse-loving husband, Dave, bought an old mare that produced their first racer.
Melissa and her sister Simone Noud raced that filly together and, later, each trained a yearling for the track.
"They were good, both of them," Melissa said, "but not world beaters by any stretch of the imagination."
At age 3, Mary rode along with her dad on the jog cart at Clinton County Fairgrounds. It was no surprise when she grew up to enter Morrisville College's saddlehorse management and production program.
"She kept telling us, you have to get back into (racing)," Melissa laughed.
"We told her, 'We're too old.'"
They'd been out of the horse business for 14 years when Dave's imminent retirement from the State Department of Corrections and Mary's decision to put her special-ed degree aside for a time to try her hand at training awoke the bug in them again.
At the SUNY Morrisville yearling sale, every promising prospect sold for far more than the Goodriches's $2,000 limit.
Finally, for $1,700, horseman Ed Stone offered them a colt named Star of Paradise. He'd paid that same price early in the sale.
"He was so nice to be with in the stall, so quiet and so gentle," said Melissa of the horse. "We said, 'We'll take him.'"
They insisted Stone take the full $2,000 they'd planned to spend.
TRAINED IN PEASLEEVILLE
The colt proved just as easygoing outside the stall. Melissa and Mary broke him to harness on the quiet McGarr Road in Peasleeville.
"He acted as if he'd had it all done before," Melissa said.
Within a few months, the horse was training in Willsboro. Had that farm not been sold to make way for the new school, said Dave, the horse would likely be there still, mostly racing at fairs.
But it happened otherwise, and they moved Parry to Saratoga Harness Track, where Mary's husband, Mike, took a maintenance job.
The horse showed his first real promise as a 3-year-old, when he placed fourth in a stakes race.
"He was a good horse, but he wasn't what you call spectacular," Mary said.
INJURED
The Erie Canal Pacing Series at Vernon Downs showcased Parry's growing talent that next spring when he qualified for the final.
It was soon after that that the injury sidelined him.
Stall rest, magnetic wraps for a half-hour or so daily - two months stretched into three before X-rays showed the fracture had healed.
"We just kept praying about it and kept going," Melissa said.
After two more months freedom on a Saratoga farm, Parry graduated to slow jogs before stepping up training again. And June 1, 2002, as a 5-year-old, he won his qualifying race.
"From that time on," Melissa said, "he started showing us incredible speed."
With driver Bert Belanger on board, Parry won the first two legs of the Frank Fitzgerald Pacing Series.
"It was like winning the lottery," Melissa said.
When the horse finished third in the final, she knew he'd given his all.
"It's the effort we see in him that we treasure," she said.
PERSONALITY
The family endows the animal with almost human qualities, something Dave likes to call equine-ality.
The way he delights in nuzzling Mike's beard.
And nips at Mary's boots if he's down for a nap and she dares enter his stall.
Clearly, he's saying, "'Go away,'" she laughed.
Dave babies Parry - as he does the rest of the string.
About 9 at night, each horse gets fresh water, hay cubes, loose hay, maybe an apple and a few carrots.
"I call it tuckin' 'em in and kissing 'em goodnight," he chuckled.
Parry returns the affection, playfully snatching at the man's hat or sleeve.
One morning, Dave had him harnessed up and ready to go, but the horse wouldn't move.
"I hadn't snapped one shaft in the quick-hitch harness," Dave said. "He wasn't about to go out only half rigged.
"He kinda looks out for me."
WINNING ACCLAIM
Star of Paradise won 13 of 39 races at Saratoga in 2003. He placed second seven times, third three times.
The Harness Horse Writers Saratoga chapter named him the 2003 Horse of the Year, Aged Pacer of the Year and Pacer of the Year.
And Mary won the Up and Coming Trainer of the Year award.
"It was a dream come true," said Mary, to whom that last prize came as a total stunner.
"This is a family thing," she added. "That's the best part."
So far in 2004, Parry has won three of his eight starts, placing third in three others.
"Drive him like you own him, and have a safe trip," Dave tells Belanger as he swings himself onto the racing bike every race night.
"Bert has never done less," Melissa said.
The Goodriches and Gasts hope to see their "Star" equal and even surpass last year's record, but their love for Parry goes far beyond speed.
"You're stuck with us for life," Mary told the horse after a recent race. "Does that bother you?"
Star of Paradise, she remembered, laughing, "shook his head 'no,' just like he knew.
"This horse is a member of our family," Mary said. "He has a home for life."
