Lowell, Massachusetts (Part 8)

Miscellaneous

After working on this project from March to December 2006, I think it's finally time to give it a rest. Here are a few pictures I had laying around.

Worthen Street, on the edge of downtown and the Acre. James McNeil Whistler, the Whistler's Mother guy, was born in the blue house here. His father worked for Locks and Canals as an agent for the Machine Shop, which was where the parking lot for the National Park Visitor's Center is today (end of Broadway St). Whistler didn't live in Lowell for too long, and I don't believe he ever really considered it home. Other famous Lowellians: Jack Kerouac of course was a proud son (I think many of us are less proud of him than vice versa) and Ed McMahon from The Johnny Carson Show considered it home. Bette Davis and Michael Chiklis (Vic on The Shield) were born here. Civil War General Benjamin Franklin Butler lived here in a huge Belvidere mansion that is long gone. The Whistler House has been home to the Lowell Art Association for almost 100 years.

Dutton St from across the Merrimack Canal. This street seems to house many artists today. The big white place in the second picture has been a factory, a department store, and now it's apartments with great views of the city and really, really high ceilings. The place with the Union Jack in the window in the first picture is Ymittos Candle Company - they did the candles for Pirates of the Caribbean

The courtyards and alleys in Market Mills / Canal Place. This is home to the National Park Visitors Center, some artist's studios, and some apartments and condos. Formerly the Bigelow Carpet Factory and Lowell Manufacturing Company before that.

Every Christmas, Lowell lights up for the holidays. I tried taking some pictures, but they all came out shaky since as you can tell, I'm not much of a photographer. I took this one last year with my cell phone of the Wannalancit Mills smokestack, done up as a giant Christmas Tree. You can see this from all over the place at night. During the day, it completely disappears, at most looking like some wires. Pretty cool.
