Making an animated documentary (a what?)

Recently animation has been gaining a foothold in the documentary world as a distinctive approach to filmmaking. Within the documentary genre, animated documentaries are unique in that though they remain rooted in real people and situations, they transcend the literal representation of live action filmmaking. Through the animator’s artistic interpretation, the viewer experiences a new level of emotional and symbolic understanding. In Conversing with Aotearoa/New Zealand, New Zealanders and tourists speak about why they are drawn to wilder places and what they experience there.

The film is meant to spark a consideration and discussion of why we go to the wilder places, what we a re seeking in an experience and how our past experiences affect the current ones. This is a more fluid, artistic approach to the subject of work and recreation in the NZ outdoors. Among the interviewees are hunters, fishermen, farmers, trampers, mountaineers,  adventurer-racers, conservationists, ecologists, artists, urban and rural dwellers, Pakeha, Maori and tourists, young, old and in between. The thread that ties them all together is a passion and love for the wild places in New Zealand.
