Up
until a few months ago, she was just another face on these streets.
She’d seen and done enough to have some kind of clue what was really
going on, but even now she'd have to admit she weren’t really ready to believe
it. Still, she followed the rules:
be home before dark, don’t invite strangers into your place.
In a neighborhood like hers, it seemed like common sense.
Then, a few months ago, she felt something.
She became stronger, tougher, and faster.
She had dreams about girls her age fighting monsters… sometimes
winning, sometimes not.
Then
this blond chica shows up one day with
a British guy in tow, telling Al (as her friends call her) that she'd been
Chosen (by what, she doesn’t know exactly) and that now she had a choice to
make. She showed Al the real reason
people are afraid to go outside, and it was a hell of a lot scarier than just
pimps and gang-bangers. She told Al
that she had the power to stand up to the vampires, the demons, and other forces
of evil; that she was la cazavampiros.
La Asesina. The Slayer.
She said Al had a choice to make.
It didn’t seem like much of a choice to Al; she couldn’t stand by and do nothing while people were hunted like animals. The blond girl didn’t stay in town too long, but she left the British guy behind to give Al a more in-depth education on the creatures of the night. He showed her the best places to hunt them, the best weapons to use, and how to use them. Al set about fulfilling her destiny, and people took notice. Maybe they don’t all know exactly what she's doing, but they see the difference she is making and they appreciate it. One of the local landlords even gave her a whole floor in one of his buildings for Al and her crew to crash in (on 109th Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam). Al has suffered her share of setbacks, but she's still fighting. How can she not, when evil keeps raising the stakes like they do?
