Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland saw the most casualties ever in a single day in the United States. On September 17, 1862 during the U.S. Civil War, 35 hundred Americans died and nearly 20 thousand were wounded fighting each other here. The battle was a prelude to the more famous Gettysburg, Pennsylvania conflict fought less than nine months later. Military historians have mainly concluded the result that day in Sharpsburg was a tactical draw. However, at the time it was seen in the north as a repulse to southern invasion, and in effect therefor became a Confederate failure to strike a decisive blow.

The beauty of the preserved site is not merely in its scenery. Antietam NBP hosts serenity. On the late morning in February, 2008 when these images were captured there was barely a sound above the breeze across the fields. Out of sheer lack of words, I have decided to let the pictures tell the story of Sharpsburg and the battle and the deaths. The park is easily driven in an hour, but deserves a day for reflection and observance.
