Stop #7 The Town of Hornitos and St. Catherine Catholic Church


When someone died, above ground graves were built, and rocks were piled around them. These graves resembled outdoor ovens. This is one theory as to how Hornitos got its name.
St. Catherine Catholic Church was built in (1863?) 1865.

Hornitos was once notorious bandit Joaquin Murrieta's "hang out." See his escape tunnel from Rosie's Fandango Hall.
