Stop #10 The Town of La Grange

The town was born in the time of the Gold Rush. By 1856, La Grange was a bustling place. The Miners and Business Men's Directory's listed 215 merchants, miners, artisans, motel keepers, attorneys, and physicians in the town. La Grange means "The Barn" in French. No one knows for sure how La Grange got its name. It might have been named for the great French mathematician, Joseph Louis Lagrange. La Grange was previously named "French Bar."
