Described by a visitor from the Smithsonian Museum as "The best small museum west of the Mississippi." The Mariposa Museum meets and even exceeds visitors' expectations. In addition to its 85 volunteer docents, the museum also boasts a Junior Docent Program with local 4th graders sharing their expertise with visiting students from throughout California.
The outside displays include hydraulic monitors, a five-stamp mill, two homes, numerous devices used to recover gold, a Miwok Indian display, and several wagons. There are thousands of items from the Gold Rush era.
The California State Mining and Mineral Museum with its 13 lb. Fricot solid gold nugget and 3,000 + other mineral exhibits is huge and extensive, a must see if you are ever in the area.
