THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH

They came by wagon. They came by ship. They came across the
Ismthus of Panama.

When Dr. J. S. Holliday's book, The World Rushed In, was first published in 1981, The Washington Post predicted, "It seems unlikely that anyone will write a more comprehensive book about the Gold Rush." The book has become a recognized classic.
Using William Swain's diary, letters sent to him from back home by his wife and brother, and eyewitness accounts of more than five hundred other gold seekers, Dr. Holliday tells of the journeys by both land and sea to the gold fields and of life in the mining camps of California and every 49er's hope to return home with a "Pocketful of Rocks."
