Gold From Hard Rock Minning

Loaded Ore Cart A double jack team Dank Mine Shaft

A special, short-handled hammer called a "single jack" was used for single-jack drilling. Hammer heads weigh 3 to 4 pounds, and handles were about 10 inches long. This was a one-man operation. Double-jack drilling involved two men. One held and turned the drill while the other man used the long-handled jack hammer.
Mining was a low-paid, dangerous job that involved not only underground hazards but also exposure to toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide used to extract gold from rock.
