Teachers: Photos shown on this page are Information Sites you will visit as you take this Self-Directed (Independent) Social Science Study Course, "History of the Mother Lode," offered through the School of Professional Studies, Fresno Pacific University.
SOC 900, History Of The Mother Lode, is a Self-Guided (Independent) Study Course designed to help teachers become more knowledgeable about the history of California. (Each of the six courses offered by Bob and Elaine Kirchner, through Fresno Pacific University, is unique in its purpose, requirements, assignments, materials and visitation sites.)
Accreditation: Fresno Pacific University is the only fully accredited, Christian liberal arts senior school in the southern part of California's great Central Valley. The School of Professional Studies, through its Center for Professional Development (CPD), offers a variety of independent study courses to help meet the ever-increasing demand for professional growth for k-12 educators. To provide flexibility and to better serve the needs of the school community, these courses are delivered using a combination of modalities: printed materials and texts, audiotapes, videotapes, CD-ROM, and on-line distance learning. These courses are not on-campus courses.
Travel is by the teacher's own private car, and teachers have one year to complete all requirements.
SOC 900V HISTORY OF THE MOTHER LODE, is offered on CD-ROM for teachers who prefer to
complete the course in the comforts of home. It is not a travel course.
(Teachers may download and make copies of photos for classroom use.)
Information Stop #1, Photo of Dials Rock Shop, located about 7 miles west of Mariposa, on Hwy. 140.
The late Ralph Dials. Behind Ralph (over his right shoulder) is a photo taken by this instructor which shows Ralph holding an 8 ounce gold nugget.
Slate Mountain, immediately across Hwy. 140 from Dials Rock Shop. Great amounts of slate have been taken (and are still being taken today) from this mountain. Layers of "tilted up" slate can be clearly seen next to the highway.

Left: A teacher, enrolled in the "History of the Mother Lode" course, sits along Agua Fria Creek, behind Dials Rock Shop. Teachers have been permitted to try their luck at finding "color" along this creek. (Note the "Course Booklet" which the teacher completes during her visits to the 10 Infomation Stops.)
Center: Information Stop #2, a posted sign, 7/10 of a mile from Dials Rock Shop, gives information about Agua Fria, "cold water," the County Seat of Mariposa County in 1850. At that time, Mariposa County comprised nearly 1/5 of the entire state. The population of Agua Fria in the late 1850's was several thousand, many of whom were Chinese, placer mining ground first worked over by whites. Destructive fires have left no vestige of Agua Fria remaining.
