In the early days the Christians were accustomed to solemnize the anniversary of a martyr's death for Christ at the place of martyrdom. In the fourth century, neighboring dioceses began to interchange feasts, to transfer relics, to divide them, and to join in a common feast; as is shown by the invitation of St. Basil of Caesarea (397) to the bishops of the province of Pontus. Frequently groups of martyrs suffered on the same day, which naturally led to a joint commemoration. In the persecution of Diocletian the number of martyrs became so great that a separate day could not be assigned to each. But the Church, feeling that every martyr should be venerated, appointed a common day for all.
The first trace of this we find in Antioch on the Sunday after Pentecost. We also find mention of a common day in a sermon of St. Ephrem the Syrian (373), and in the 74th homily of St. John Chrysostom (407). At first only martyrs and St. John the Baptist were honoured by a special day. Other saints were added gradually, and increased in number when a regular process of canonization was established; still, as early as 411 there is in the Chaldean Calendar a "Commemoratio Confessorum" for the Friday after Easter.
In the West Boniface IV, May, 13 609, or 610, consecrated the Pantheon in Rome to the Blessed Virgin and all the martyrs, ordering an anniversary. Gregory III (731-741) consecrated a chapel in the basilica of St. Peter to all the saints and fixed the anniversary for November 1. A basilica of the Apostles already existed in Rome, and its dedication was annually remembered on May 1. Gregory IV (827- 844) extended the celebration on 1 November to the entire Church. The vigil seems to have been held as early as the feast itself. The octave was added by Sixtus IV (1471-84). </color>
(Information taken from the Catholic Encyclopedia) </COLOR>

Feast of All Souls - November 2
Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed </color>
Today is the feast of All Souls, this is the day set aside out of the year for us to pray for the souls of all who have died, especially the souls in purgatory waiting for the joys of heaven. This feast has biblical origins, for example, in the Second Book of Maccabees, "Judas made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin, and it has historical origins because from the beginning of the Church, the Faithful were encouraged to pray for all who had died.
A day set aside for prayer for all who had died began to be observed in the Middle ages. In the eleventh century, St. Odilo, Abbot of Cluny, decreed that the monks should set aside November 2 as a special day to pray for the dead in the Divine Office, and through special prayers.
The theological ideas for this feast day are based on the fact that very few of us achieve perfection in our lives on earth, so we must remove the scars of our sinfulness and imperfection before we come face-to-face with God. This day is set aside for the Church on earth to pray for those who have died and are still preparing to meet God face-to-face.
A more recent addition to this celebration happened in 1915 when Pope Benedict XV stated in an apostolic constitution that priests could celebrate three Masses on this day. The intention for the first Mass is for a particular intention of the priest, the intention of the second is for all the Faithful Departed, and the intention of the third is for the intentions of the Pope. </COLOR>

The month of November and especially All Souls Day is a traditional time for visiting graves of loved ones and remembering all the Faithful who have died. The claim being made was not that Christians were already perfect. Rather, the early church writings called Christians saints because the Lord calls us to holiness---the word saint means "holy one." Through our baptismal initiation into Jesus' own life of holiness, Christians have been given a privileged vocation: to become saints in imitation of our Lord. </COLOR>

WHO BELONGS TO THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS? </color>
The communion of saints, that is, the communion of the holy, includes all those who are now living on earth (the pilgrim church), those who are being purified in purgatory (the church suffering), and those who are blessed in heaven (the church in glory).
The term communion of saints also underscores that the People of God, the church, is a eucharistic community. The church is a community of people, a real communion, gathered around the eucharistic table of the risen Lord. The bond of love makes us one. Those of us who are still living depend on the prayers and good works of our Christian brothers and sisters who are united to us in the friendship of the Lord. We also believe in the value of prayer for our departed brothers and sisters who are being purified in purgatory. Finally, we believe that those Christian heroes whom we call saints in heaven are vitally interested in those of us who are still living. </COLOR>

WHO IS A SAINT? </color>
A saint is a good person. Saints are people who always choose the better of two courses open to them. Saints are Christian models of holiness.
Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit the Catholic Church will sometimes declare that a person who lived a good life and died a death joined to Jesus is a saint. The process leading to adding a person s name to the list of saints (canonization) involves a careful study of that person's life and a sign from God (usually miracles performed in that person's name) that this person is truly a saint and worthy of our imitation. Every person in heaven is truly a saint, whether canonized or not. By looking at the son, you can clearly see the features of the father. What joy belongs to that father! So it is with all of the Saints . . . they resemble their Father: What joy belongs to our Eternal Father in seeing His "features" in His children!
"On November 1, we celebrate the great Solemnity of All Saints. This I cast includes all the Canonized Saints who are known and revered throughout the world, and also the unknown Saints whose glory, though hidden from our eyes, is manifested in a marvelous way throughout all of Heaven. All Saints Day is a Feast for all the citizens of Heaven.
"Throughout their lives, the Saints continually looked into the Face of Jesus as in a mirror. Then when He stood before them as Just Judge, the Lord recognized in their souls the Image of His Father. All of the Saints resemble the Father in a different way; they all imitated Jesus in a manner unlike any other; and the Holy Spirit showered upon each of them singular graces. Each Saint is unique and unrepeatable!
"And yet, though each Saint glorifies the Holy Trinity in a unique way, they all have common denominators in their quest for union with God. These trusty guides are LOVE and ZEAL! There is not a Saint in Heaven who did not love God during his earthly life, nor is there a Saint who was not on fire with zeal for God and His Kingdom - for when we truly love God, we want everyone to experience the joy of failing in love with Love.

"These two common denominators to sanctity are expressed differently in every Saint. Some Saints, like Saint Stephen, Saint Agnes of Rome and Saint Ignatius of Antioch, expressed their zeal and love in a great desire for martyrdom. This desire was found acceptable to the Lord and they were granted the grace of shedding their blood for Christ.
"In a similar way, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, and Saint Anthony of Padua had ardent desires to be martyred for the sake of Christ. And yet each of them died from complications of an illness, far from the mission field where they wanted to be slain. These unfulfilled desires do not make them less pleasing to God. Rather, their heroic zeal and love have won for them the crown of "white" martyrdom, and their intercession and fame has continued to increase through the ages.
"Some of the Saints seemed to be born saints, for from their earliest moments the special mark of God on their soul was evident to all who saw them. Saint Dominic Savio was just a young boy when he died. Yet his piety and composure, love and simplicity, shone like a halo around his head. At a young age, he boldly proclaimed: "Death rather than sin!"
"In Blessed Jacinta and Blessed Francisco, we see a similar zeal and love for God. Blessed Jacinta displayed her love and zeal through an ardent desire to save souls. At only seven years old, she was willing to forsake all for the salvation of poor sinners. Blessed Francisco exercised his love and zeal by a great desire to make reparation to his "Hidden Jesus" in the Tabernacle. Each reached sanctity at an early age, though they took different roads to reach this goal.
"The roads to holiness are as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. Saint Therese found the Merciful Love of God through her "Little Way" of confidence, while Saint Augustine found Him by the intellectual ascent to Truth. Saint Rose of Lima came closer to God through penance and discipline, while Saint Bernadette came to know Him by humbly accepting the Will of God in her daily life. Pope Saint Pius X reached great heights of sanctity through his childlike simplicity and his joy-filled poverty, while Saint John of the Cross climbed to the summit of perfection by mystical contemplation. Saint Faustina became an apostle of Mercy by desiring to be hidden in Christ, while Saint Francis Xavier became a great apostle by going to the ends of the earth to convert the pagans there. Their roads are all different and yet their Goal remains the same.

"We are all called to be saints. We are all called to great holiness. This life passes so quickly, and the next life is for all Eternity. Let us take courage from Saint Teresa of Avila's words: "Come what may, happen what will, let those complain who will, tire yourself as you must, but even if you die half way along the road . . . tend always toward the Goal."
". . . , let us (all) ask for the intercession of all the Saints, that like them we may also reach the Goal, adorned with the Grace of God, perfectly reflecting the Image of the Father within our soul. Also, let us not forget those souls in Purgatory, who await their release to the eternal bliss of Heaven. They too will someday be saints in the Kingdom of God. Let us not abandon them in our prayers, for when they enter into their citizenship in Heaven, they will surely intercede for us - until we all are united forever. I love You," . . . . . . "We are all called to be holy. In our everyday life we can offer our love, our pain, our joys and our state in life to Jesus to make us holy."
(Mother M. But the price of these deaths is the death of one man. How many deaths were bought with one dying man, who was the grain of wheat that would not have been multiplied if he had not died! You have heard his words when he was drawing near to our passion, that is, when he was drawing near to our redemption: Unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
On the cross, you see, Christ transacted a grand exchange; it was there that the purse containing our price was untied; when his side was laid open by the lance of the executioner, there poured out from it the price of the whole wide world. The faithful were bought, and the martyrs; but the faith of the martyrs has been proved, and their blood is the witness to it. The martyrs have paid back what was spent for them, and they have fulfilled what Saint John says: Just as Christ laid down his life for us, so we too should lay down our lives for the brethren. And in another place it says: You have sat down at a great table; consider carefully what is set before you, since you ought to prepare the same kind of thing yourself. It is certainly a great table, where the Lord of the table is himself the banquet.
No-one feeds his guests on himself; that is what the Lord Christ did, being himself the host, himself the food and drink. Therefore the martyrs recognized what they ate and drank, so that they could give back the same kind of thing. But from where could they give back the same kind of thing, if the one who made the first payment had not given them the means of giving something back? What shall I pay back to the Lord for all the things he has paid back to me? I will receive the cup of salvation. What is this cup? The bitter but salutary cup of suffering, the cup which the invalid would fear to touch if the doctor did not drink it first. That is what this cup is; we can recognize this cup on the lips of Christ, when he says, Father, if it can be so, let this cup pass from me. It is about this cup that the martyrs said, I will receive the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.
So are you not afraid of failing at this point? No? Why not? Because, I will call upon the name of the Lord. How could the martyrs ever conquer, unless that one conquered in them who said, Rejoice, since I have conquered the world? The emperor of the heavens was governing their minds and tongues, and through them overcoming the devil on earth and crowning the martyrs in heaven. O, how blessed are those who drank this cup thus!
