California, Arizona, New Mexico

(Go to Page 1, above for Texas and Oklahoma)

Dipping our wheels in the Pacific at Santa Monica Pier. Just after this shot a wave really got us wet and sandy!

Getting started on Santa Monica Blvd.

El Cajon Pass (we made it!)

Jan enters the desert prepared for the threat of dehydration.

Amboy CA (pop 2). We met them both! No water at their inn, but we had a generous offer to stay up the road in a private house.

A local landmark: "The Shoetree". We expected an abandoned store!

The beautifully restored Goffs Schoolhouse museum . A treasure we found in the middle of the desert.

Our last night in the beautiful Mojave.

Crossing the Colorado River into Arizona. The plaque marks the site of an early Route 66 bridge.

Oatman, our first overnight in Arizona. A funky one hotel mining town that draws a lot of tourists.

Leaving Oatman over the Sitgreaves Pass. What a climb!

Cool Springs, one of the many Route 66 landmarks that local people are trying desperately to maintain and restore. The old truck and gas pump are examples of relics seen all along Route 66.

Every cyclist needs a layover day! Kingman AZ.

Leaving Kingman we looped northeast to Peach Springs, the Hualapai Reservation and Seligman. Leaving Seligman we climbed and climbed!

We are using Interstate 40 more and more because Rte. 66 (coming from right) has been replaced by the Interstate (looking west at Ashfork).

We made it to 5400 ft. before Williams!

We did get some back country riding between Williams and Flagstaff on a dirt road through Ponderosa and high prairie ranches.

Finally! Scenes from the Grand Canyon....

and Sedona.

Flagstaff was a very nice place to layover (the campus of Northern Arizona University.)

In Winslow, there's a statue to "Standing on the Corner".

Winslow has an attractive park dedicated to Route 66.

In Holbrook, we stayed at the Wigwam Motel (note squaw with snack).

In Eastern Arizona, the landscape is almost back to desert.

New Mexico bluffs at the border between NM and Arizona.

Looking back at Arizona across the Rio Puerco wash.

Approaching the Continental Divide (7225 feet elev.)

In the mine at the New Mexico Mining Museum (very good for history and technology of uranium mining.)

At the Sky Casino later that day - Jan figures. (We spent 50 cents.)

The pool area at the Sky Casino Hotel -- very nicely set up.

And, Albuquerque in the valley below.

In Albuquerque's Botanic Garden, the conservatory building housing a desert and a Mediterranean environment.

And the last town in New Mexico, San Jon ("san yon"), population 300+...

Where our inn-keeper found a horny toad on the property.

And on the way out of New Mexico, the weather came in cold and windy, slowing us down a lot! Temp. 39 deg. Wind out of NE at 20 mph gusts to 30.
