Just Plain Lazy - September 6, 2003
by Marty Smith

This episode wasn't really a large problem for any handicapped person specifically. The man's actions were simply irritating as he appeared arrogant and elitist.

Perhaps the man's wife said something to him as they were tucking their daughter into the child seat. Perhaps next time he'll slow down a bit and walk the extra 20 feet with his wife and daughter, taking time to enjoy the day with his family.

No one likes to walk a long way through a parking lot when we just need to run in and quickly back out of a business but this person felt he deserved the privilege of parking in the last handicapped spot in front of Chucky Cheese on a busy Saturday afternoon.  Ok, I thought...  perhaps he has a very young child inside or perhaps a pregnant wife...  nope, the child was about 3-4 years old and able to climb into the car seat by herself and the wife seemed fit enough.  Maybe one of them had some hidden medical condition?  Perhaps...  or perhaps he felt a BMW should be parked right in front of the door to be admired instead of the empty place only 20 feet away across the driving lane and behind him?  Or perhaps he simply did not care if his selfish actions caused someone else discomfort or even harm?  Or maybe he did care just a little bit judging from the look of embarrassment on his face and hurried manner getting into the car when he realized I was taking a photo.

Just Plain Lazy...  Part 2 - January 11, 2004
by Marty Smith
Is there an obscure government regulation that requires sport utility vehicle owners to be arrogant, stupid and lazy??? The parking lot of this grocery store near Castleton, Indiana is hard enough to navigate without illegally parked vehicles blocking the lanes immediately outside the grocery and pharmacy doors. Notice the empty parking spaces only a few feet away? These photos were taken as I entered the pharmacy. The vehicle was still blocking the lane when I left the store about 15 minutes later but the owners of the vehicle returned at about the same time (I was carrying two large bags so couldn't get to my camera quickly...  continued below the photo).
Was the young couple who got into the vehicle carry a large amount of purchases that required them to break the law and park the sport utility vehicle in the fire lane illegally so as to ease the burden of transporting and loading?  NO!!!   Was either the man or the woman handicapped so as to offer a reason for parking so close to the store doors and therefore inconveniencing and endangering the other shoppers?  NO!!!  The young lady who got into the sport utility vehicle was carrying a bouquet of flowers and the young man was talking on a cellular telephone...  both of them apparently in good physical condition and not encumbered with bags or large packages. The only plausible reasons I could ponder for parking the sport utility vehicle illegally in the fire lane, inconveniencing and endangering their neighbors, was a false sense of self importance, a complete lack of common sense and common courtesy compounding the stereotypical arrogance and laziness of a "yuppie" couple who owns a sport utility vehicle for the sole purpose of maintaining a social image.
