This trilogy really does make one's head hurt if pondered too deeply. I suppose I have a mental trigger as my first name is the same as the Michael J. Fox character.  The mechanism of time travel is never explained beyond the "flux capacitor" but the real sci-fi theme of the movies is the paradoxes created by time travel. To be effective writers Robert Zemeckis & Bob Gale had to be meticulous with every detail and interconnection...  well done!  Christopher Lloyd is hilarious and the rest of the primary cast (Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson) mesh perfectly.

I was soooooo disappointed with the first feature film edition of the original Star Trek series. The 2nd installment was great, followed by a disappointing 3rd movie then the 4th being my favorite...  honestly, the even numbered films are the best, though all are worth watching if you liked the original series.
