When: February 1-3, 2008
Where: Troop Camp House, Camp Inawendiwin, Tabernacle, NJ
Deadline to Register: January 14th meeting, no exceptions!
Cost: will be determined by number of attendees and your menu
What’s it all about? It’s an opportunity for Crew members to work on
leadership skills and understand the details of how the Venturing program works.
You will learn how to put together all the components of planning a successful
trip, to ensure future trips run more smoothly. You will work on cooking skills,
teamwork, menu planning, shopping and supply lists and all the other things that
go on at trip planning meetings.
What do you need to do? All members of the Crew will be responsible for
dividing into squads of 3-5 scouts (adults included). You get to decide who you
will work with, instead of being assigned to a squad by the Activity Chair and
Trip Advisor. You will then work in your squad to come up with a well-balanced
menu, determine what you will need to prepare and serve your meal, develop your
budget, shop for your food supplies, gather the supplies you will need and come
up with a plan for the weekend. You will have to cook using at least four
different outdoor cooking techniques (Dutch oven, box oven, grill over charcoal,
open fire or wood fire, foil packs, propane stove, utensil-less, etc) over the
course of the weekend
In between meals, there will be a program, developed by the advisors, to help
you learn or practice some of the basic skills needed to survive a weekend at
camp. Some of the Basic Outdoor Skills in the challenge could include any of the
following: fire-building, leave no trace, packing techniques, gear selection,
woods tools and lashing/shelter-building, flag ceremonies ,fire starters [making
them], dishwashing, cleaning and/or setting up propane stoves & lanterns, knots
for hanging dunk lines & tarps, how to develop a program and schedule and then
stick to them.
