Graphic from Animation FactoryGimme Defined

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers...neither of whom can putt very well.

The term gimme applies to a shot that the other players agree can count automatically. This is usually done when the ball is right next to the hole, and is a time saving measure. The non-putting player gives the putting player a gimme, and the putting player just assumes the ball would have gone in.

Gimmes are never required. The non-putting player can choose to allow a gimme or not allow it at any time.
