Subject: UnrealityA key concept that has revolutionized the thinking of all who have studied Mary Baker Eddy 's writings is her understanding of the statement in Genesis: "And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Before I learned of Science and Health, I had read this statement many, many times and never grasped it's far reaching significance. Now the answer to the question seems obvious: Which is real - good, evil, or a mixture of good and evil? Mrs. Eddy asks, "...can the infinite do less than bestow all good...?"* If God is the Creator of all good, could He also be the author of evil - sin, sickness, and death? Interestingly, Mrs. Eddy made this statement: "Understanding is the line of demarcation between the real and unreal."* Understanding delineates what is real to us. In other words, it is what we are thinking. Here is an example of the application of this concept from Science and Health: "We never read that Luke or Paul made a reality of disease in order to discover some means of healing it. Jesus never asked if disease were acute or chronic, and he never recommended attention to laws of health, never gave drugs, never prayed to know if God were willing that a man should live. He understood man, whose Life is God, to be immortal, and knew that man has not two lives, one to be destroyed and the other to be made indestructible."* Fred Rock |
