Doctrine of AtonementDo you ever feel separated from God? I do when I am not feeling well, or when I think I know it all, or when I become confused with choices. Mary Baker Eddy wrote, "Let us rid ourselves of the belief that man is separated from God, and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love." She recognized that this feeling of separation from God is at the root of all maladies afflicting man. In the Bible, Paul says, "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." So, the way I have learned to resolve problems that I face is through making a conscious effort to align my thinking with what is true: we are never separated from God. Mrs. Eddy wrote, "It is ignorance and false belief, based on a material sense of things, which hide spiritual beauty and goodness." Jesus showed us what is true about God through what he taught and did. He healed. He forgave. He demonstrated our power over even death. Mrs. Eddy wrote, "Jesus aided in reconciling man to God by giving man a truer sense of Love, the divine Principle of Jesus' teachings, and this truer sense of Love redeems man from the law of matter, sin, and death by the law of Spirit,--the law of divine Love." This is meaning of the atonement. Georgiana Rock |
