Comments on the Bible Lesson

"...man is, not shall be, perfect and immortal."

- Mary Baker Eddy

Probation After Death

As I read this lesson, I found myself feeling very discouraged. The idea of being on probation makes me feel very flawed, and actually hopeless. My wife, however, told me that this lesson was one of four that Mrs. Eddy included for the express purpose of refuting certain conventional beliefs - certain beliefs she found not supported in the Bible. These beliefs are certainly inconsistent with a God who is characterized by flawlessness, and who is our creator.

She wrote, "The great spiritual fact must be brought out that man is, not shall be, perfect and immortal. We must hold forever the consciousness of existence, and sooner or later, through Christ and Christian Science, we must master sin and death. The evidence of man's immortality will become more apparent, as material beliefs are given up and the immortal facts of being are admitted."*

Sin and death are both things that are suggestions about us being less than perfect, and Mrs. Eddy is affirming the fact that they are beliefs - beliefs that will fall in the face of the spiritual facts.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote, "Heaven is not a locality, but a divine state of Mind in which all the manifestations of Mind are harmonious and immortal, because sin is not there and man is found having no righteousness of his own, but in possession of "the mind of the Lord," as the Scripture says."*
