Adam and Fallen ManMary Baker Eddy had a very different understanding of the account of the creation. The story of Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis is one that most know: the story of how Adam was the first man, created from the dust of the earth, and how he was tempted by Eve, fell from grace, and was cast out of the garden of Eden. However, few realize that this version is a second account of the creation. The first version is very different. In the first chapter of Genesis, it says, "So God created man is his own image, in the image of God created he him...And God saw everything he had made, and, behold it was very good." Mrs. Eddy writes, "The Science and truth of the divine creation have been presented in the verses already considered, and now the opposite error, a material view of creation, is to be set forth. The second chapter of Genesis contains a statement of this material view of God and the universe, a statement which is the exact opposite of scientific truth as before recorded. The history of error or matter, if veritable, would set aside the omnipotence of Spirit; but it is the false history in contradistinction to the true."* "Although presenting the exact opposite of Truth, the lie claims to be truth. The creations of matter arise from a mist or false claim, or from mystification, and not from the firmament, or understanding, which God erects between the true and false. In error everything comes from beneath, not from above. All is material myth, instead of the reflection of Spirit."* I personally had seen the contradictions in the first two chapters of Genesis, but it was not until I learned of Christian Science I could make sense of it. The distinction between spiritual man and material man is extremely important, to see ourselves as the "man of God's creating" and not as man whose roots are in the dust. The truth heals. - Fred Rock |
