Sept. 29, 1998
The 1998 President’s Cup competition was played on Sept. 29, 1998
between 1st Half winner Angelo Cornell and 2nd half winner George
Piotrowski. The following summary details the action:
#1 Angelo’s 1st drive cleared the ditch in the center followed by a
2nd to the right fringe near the sand. George’s 1st & 2nd were down the
right side, 3rd caught the right green side bunker. He finished with a
sand shot and a pitch to 1’ for a 6. Angelo pitched by 5’ and made the
putt for a 4 and the hole. (Cornell +1)
#2 George’s 1st
and 2nd were down the right with a pitch to the front fringe. Angelo
had a center fairway drive, 2nd to the front fringe. George left his
35’ 1st putt short and missed the 2nd for a 6. Angelo pitched to 3’
finishing with a 4 and the hole. (Cornell +2)
#3 Both were down the left near #15 tee requiring punch 2nds. George
recovered from a short 3rd with a great lob wedge to 2’and putt for a 5.
Angelo chipped to 8’ and hit the left cup edge for a 4, halving the
hole. (Cornell +2)
#4 Both had great drives, George drew his to the center, Angelo’s
reached the fringe of the front green side sand, his chip 2nd failed to
clear the trap rolling back in. George worm burned to pin high, 10 yds
right, pitched to 12’, and 2 putted. Angelo’s sand shot left him a
10’er that slide by for a 5, giving George the hole. (Cornell +1)
#5 Both golfers had good drawing drives, George laid up to 130 out,
Angelo used a driver for his 2nd to clear the water but dropped his 3rd
into the right green side sand. George approach 3rd also found the
front sand. Both golfers had sand shots and 2 putts, giving George the
hole. (Even)
#6 George sent an 8 iron to the back left of the green. Angelo found
the left green side sand but followed with a great sand shot to 2’ for a
conceded 3. George left his 1st putt 4’ short and missed the par
attempt, giving Angelo the hole. (Cornell +1)
#7 Both golfers had excellent drives down the center. Angelo’s 2nd
was long and left, while George’s 2nd was pin high in the long grass 5
yds. right. George followed with a nice chip to 5’. Angelo’s punched
his 3rd to 20’ and missed the par, giving George the hole. (Even)
#8 Angelo sent a 1 iron down the left side long, George put a 3 iron
pin high left near the green side sand. Each golfer took a couple to
reach the green, Angelo’s 15’ missed, George sank a 4’er to win the
hole. (Piotrowski +1)
#9 Angelo had a good drive down the left side and followed with a 2nd
that went long into the back green side sand. George pushed his drive
right towards the fairway sand and hit a nice 7 iron from a tricky sand
trap fringe lie. Both 3rds found the green, followed by 2 putts,
halving the hole. (Piotrowski +1)
#10 George had
a right side drive and pulled his 2nd near the green side sand. Angelo
followed a great drive with a 9 iron to 3’. George reached in 3 and 2
putted. Angelo converted the 3’er for birdie and the hole. (Even)
#11 George’s drive found the left side woods requiring an unplayable
2nd drop followed by a 3rd to the left front fringe. Angelo sent his
drive down the center, 2nd to the right front fringe. Chips and 2 putts
halved the hole. (Even)
#12 Angelo’s banged a large drive to 65 yds out but duffed the 2nd
only 50 yds. George’s drive found right side problems but recovered
with a chip to the back left side pin location, draining the 6’er for a
par and the hole. (Piotrowski +1)
#13 Angelo sent a nice wedge to within 20’. George was back, left
just off the green. Both needed 3 more to finish, halving the hole with
4s. (Piotrowski +1)
#14 George’s drive reached the left fairway sand followed by 2 punch
shots and a chip to 20’. Angelo sent his drive into #12 fairway and
followed with a 4 iron around the willow tree to the right green side
sand. He chipped and 2 putted for a 5, George 3 putted for a 7, giving
Angelo the hole. (Even)
#15 George had right side tree problems, reaching the green in 4.
Angelo continued with steady tee shots putting a wedge 2nd to within 20’
and a 2 putt 4. George’s 2’ 2nd putt stayed out, costing the hole. (Cornell +1)
#16 Both tee shots went towards the left green side sand, George’s
stopping a few feet short, Angelo rolling in. George set his 2nd
strong, a few feet over but recovered to 5’. Angelo completed the sand
shot to 15’ and drained the putt for a 3 and the hole. (Cornell +2)
#17 Golfers went separate ways, Angelo faded down the right side
while George drew left near 18’s ladies tee. He sent a 5 iron smartly
over the left side trees to the front fringe. A right side tree forced
Angelo to punch resulting in a low flying 140 yd missile to the back
fringe. Both elected to pitch leaving 5’ers that followed for 4s and
George the hole. (Cornell +1)
#18 George had a right side 220 drive followed by a pulled iron that
caught a bad break by resting next to the left side 150 tree. Angelo
sent a pair of 1 irons down the middle to leave 125 yds. George punched
then approached but caught the right green side sand. Angelo came in
long and caught the small 3’ section of high grass near the temp
construction fence. George came out to the fringe and chipped to 18’
while Angelo came down to 12’. George slid the putt just by the left
edge. Angelo sent his putt safely near the hole and George conceded the
