HUD Purchase - Shelter of the Cross

Our original home.
The Shelter of the Cross, located at 18 Aaron Samuels Blvd., was established to specifically meet the needs of the elderly, homeless population in the Greater Danbury Area.

Our program is located in a two family home which had been foreclosed and vacant for seven months through a long winter. It needed a great deal of repair.

We were able to obtain a mortgage through a local bank to purchase this home from HUD in July 1997.

The Rehab

It took nine months of rehabilitation with mostly donated services, supplies and materials to rehabilitate our home on 18 Aaron Samuels Blvd. (formally 20 Cherry Street), in Danbury, CT. Habitat for Humanity and Americares lent their support to our project. Church groups, youth groups, civic groups, community and neighborhood groups came together to help us to repair, rehabilitate, decorate and furnish our home.

Our Neighborhood

We opened our doors in March 1998 as a two-family home in a mixed neighborhood of multi-family homes. We believe our renovation spearheaded the efforts of others in the neighborhood to upgrade their homes as well. (See photos of our neighborhood as it is today)

The Shelter of the Cross has made every effort to be a good neighbor. We host the monthly meetings of the Blind Brook Neighborhood Association.

We sponsor an outdoor Concert and Ice Cream Social every Fall for residents, neighbors, board members, donors and volunteers. Picnics, Christmas Caroling and other festivities are occasions that we look forward to each year.
