|---|
| This Vermont-based artist has been painting for more than 30 years and has shown works in exhibitions and competitions in many U.S. cities. Her works vary in media and style and mood, but her inclinations are representational (though not exactly traditional), impressionistic and focused on structures (physical and theoretical), and experimental (hopeful). Media include oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, ink, and paper collage. Cath was born in Southern California and settled in Southern Vermont in 1978. She attended college in Claremont, California and graduate school in Berkeley, California. After working four years as a librarian in Phoenix, Arizona, she moved Back East to attend art school in Boston, Massachusetts and to take up residence on a tree farm. She has worked on occasion with electronic publishing and Internet companies. She is a member of ArtistsSpace NYC, American Assoc. of University Women, and the American Library Assoc. |

Painting can be a form of rummaging through life, exploring imagery and color and mood, using whatever materials can be found or purchased easily, patiently seeking something wonderful to look at, to muse upon, to alter in pursuit of some sort of perfection or peace. |
One of the big problems I have discovered in recent years is finding the time for art-making. And not only just the time: finding a span of hours -- I will take moments-- with enough isolation from everything else to provide space for concentration. And I bet I am not the only artist trying to mold a bit of beauty/truth while juggling many cares and obligations. |
Watching, experiencing, reflecting on, and translating what I see around me into two-dimensional units is basically what artmaking is for me. The translation is the key. The chosen medium, be it oil or pastel or pencil or watercolor or collage, serves that translation. Whether gestural or precise, the application of color, even more than the particular medium, aids in the the translation of my vision. And while my world may be sometimes somber or odd, it is rarely without color and light and character. |
Transforming a blank surface into something wonderful to look at is an immensely satisfying experience. Pictures that nudge memories and make you happy, or sometimes sad, are a wonderful enhancement to life. When I work on a picture I usually start with a drawing. Sometimes I use the same drawing to launch a couple of different projects: a variation in oils and in collage, for example. This is a way of exploring and stretching and playing with color and form. |
