Heading: "H" Battery, 3rd Battalion, 13th Marines, 5th Marine Division, FMF, c/o Fleet Post office, San Francisco, California Dateline: Sasebe, Kyushu, Japan, 25 November, 1945 Dear Lieutenant Stockbridge, Within the next three days the 13th Regiment will be disbanded into many scattered parts of japan and the United States. Never before has Howe Battery felt the genuine necessity to offer you a token of gratitude than it does at this time. You can be assured of the respect of every individual of your past command. We find it only natural for our past memories to come creeping back into our minds. Not only the inspiration you have been to many of us, but also the personal devotion and friendship in regards to your command. No matter how far each of us go, or how long, the experience we have shared with you will always return with a great pride and privilege of serving with you. The value of the token we send cannot compare with the value of the spirit that goes hand and hand with it. The men of the battery take honor in presenting a gift so rightfully yours. Respectfully, "H" Battery [69 signatures appended] [This letter was accompanied by a crate of souvenirs including a flag and a sword.] |
