Background

My mother played the piano when I was a child.  I thought it was the most wonderful thing that she could make music come out of that big black box.  So when I was old enough (about age three) she began to teach me to read music and play the piano.  Over the years I have played for churches, weddings, funerals, a stage band, and as an accompanist for the 3M Men’s chorus and other choirs, and for many soloists.  I also have written several arrangements of hymns and other songs.  These are published through Faith Music Publishing.

Education

I have a master’s degree in sacred music from Pensacola Christian College, 1993.  I also have extensive undergraduate course work in music from the University of South Florida.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why piano?
Piano is an excellent first instrument.  It is the easiest instrument to play, and because the keyboard gives you a visual picture of how musical notes are arranged, it is important to learn the keyboard before learning any other instrument.  And unlike most other instruments, with piano you can play your own harmonies and accompaniments.

How do you teach?
Some people can play the piano only by ear.  Some can play only by chord.  Some can play only by note.  The best pianists use a combination of these methods to play.  I like to teach a balanced approach, using all of the methods.  Many of my students use the Faber and Faber lesson series.

How long should each lesson be?
That depends on the student.  Young children do better with shorter lessons; older children and adults can learn more from longer lessons.  Some typical lesson lengths are:
    age 3-4: 15 minutes
    age 5-7: 30 minutes
    age 8-12: 45 minutes
    age 13 & up: 60 minutes
Most students have one lesson per week.  If you select shorter lessons, you may want to have them twice per week.

What piano should I buy?
Beginning pianists can get away with a "toy piano," such as you may find in a department store or electronics store.   But soon the student will notice that it doesn’t feel or sound like a real piano.   That is the time to consider purchasing a more serious musical instrument, either acoustic or electronic.   A good acoustic piano is always a better instrument than any electronic piano, but the electronic pianos are much more practical and less expensive to purchase and maintain.  Contact me if your would like some recommendations.

How do I get started?
Give me a call and we can set up a first lesson.   Once you’ve done that the hardest part is over.
