Dalmatian Jasper is one of the many varieties of Cryptocrystaline Quartz, which includes others such as agates, chalcedony, and various other jaspers.

Sources tell me this stone comes from Chihuahua, Mexico. It is not an expensive stone, and the quality seems consistent. It is pretty obvious why it is called Dalmatian Jasper once you get a look at it. Being a mixture of black and white, it is a stone that will go with almost anything, so it is sure to be a popular choice when you set it in something pretty.

As with most Jaspers and Agates, it is quite hard, and somewhat brittle. Most of the material I've seen does not have many fractures like some jaspers seem to have. It can chip while cutting, but when polished, takes a beautiful shine.
