Former Lt. Gov. Bob Henderson of the Capital City Club was unanimously elected secretary-treasurer-designate for 2003-04.

Lt. Gov. Harris said nomination of a lieutenant governor-elect for 2003-04 would be made at the July Division Council meeting. Former Lt. Gov. Larry Spalding reminded clubs that they are to elect officers this month.

Minutes for the January 13, 2003 minutes were approved.

The Treasurer’s report was accepted.

Lt. Gov. Harris said Gov. Larry Kravitz urged each club to send at least two delegates to the International Convention in June. He also handed out a flier concerning a program for clubs to hand out bike helmets with Kiwanis emblems.

The Council approved the test of a plan to establish a diaper bank to provide diapers for needy families. A one-time promotion would test community support for the program. Former Lt. Gov. Ben Fuller, Jere Moore and Jon Winter along with Chris Drep of Capital Area Healthy Start have been exploring the possibility of such a program as part of the District’s five-year Kiwanis: In Partnership for Better Beginnings. In addition to Kiwanis and Healthy Start, the partnership would involve Walmart that gives to non-profit organizations diapers it cannot sell because the packages are broker, and the Second Harvest food bank that would warehouse the diapers, receive applications for diapers and deliver some to its food customers. Also partners would be numerous churches and non-profit organizations that serve infants and their families. They would apply for, receive and distribute diapers along with parental training material to needy families. The first step probably would be a breakfast where the community would be asked to donate diapers and agencies would discuss their needs. Chuck Walter is planning to start a web page, address TBA.

Training for incoming presidents will be held May 31 at the Lake Jackson meeting room.

Former Lt. Gov. Earl Cushing, the Division Kiwanis Foundation chairman, said only four clubs had paid their Foundation dues. Payments are important because the Foundation had $72,000 in request for grants last year and only $36,000 to distribute.

Former Lt. Gov. Ben Fuller reminded clubs of the need to donate to the Jamaica fishing village project.

Killearn’s annual golf tournament will be May 5.

The Capital City Club is planning an Easter party for children, had a great turnout for its track meet and will deliver its onions the first week in May.

Lake Jackson will have a pancake breakfast on April 26.

Northside is planning to resume roadside cleanup on Thomasville Road and is considering moving to a meeting place with improved ambiance.

The Tallahassee Club’s golf tournament will be April 28. It is planning a spouses’ night at Maclay Gardens and will celebrate its 80th anniversary with a cookout. The club has two new members and two applications in process.

Lt. Gov. Harris adjourned the meeting at 8:03 p.m.
