ROLL CALL of the clubs in attendance was made. Clubs present were Capital City, Havana, Killearn, Madison, Northside, Monticello, Lake Jackson, and Tallahassee. Clubs absent were Greensboro, Perry, and Quincy. A total of 24 persons were present.
MINUTES of the council meeting of April 9, 2001 were posted on the Division 3 web page. These minutes were approved as presented by unanimous vote.
FINANCIAL REPORT was given by Ben Fuller who was substituting for Bob Henderson. He reported that there was $16,383.74 in the Division savings account and $928.01 in the checking account. The bulk of these funds are committed to the Scholarship House upgrade project which should be complete in August. All clubs have paid their dues and assessments.
BOB FOWINKLE, CANDIDATE FOR DISTRICT TREASURER 2001-2002 visited the council meeting and was introduced in his current position as District Chairperson for Risk Management/Insurance. He offered some cautions concerning liability during certain projects involving other organizations and entities. He also passed out brochures listing his qualifications for the Treasurer position and asked for division support at the August convention in Tampa.
SCHOLARSHIP HOUSE report was given by Ben Fuller. The city is requiring approx. 18 revisions in the plans before granting a permit for the construction. Doug Barlowe of the Tallahassee Club has been instrumental in assisting in making these plan revisions and Fuller said the Division owed him a debt of gratitude. It is hoped that the permit will be granted this week and construction completed by the middle of August, prior to the girls return. Enough funds are in the building fund to cover the increased requirements of the city to be handicapped accessable.
YOUNG CHILDREN PRIORITY ONE. Chairperson Johnnye Luebkeman was absent but Edna Owens indicated that the collection of books by most clubs continued.
IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDER (IDD) PROJECT chairperson Alston Kelly reported that Kiwanis International was very close to meeting the $75 million target. Kelly presented a challenge to all club presidents to make a last push to raise and send in funds for IDD between this date and September 30, 2001. The club contributing the most will win a steak dinner at Marie Livingston’s for the President and his named chair. In order to verify club contribution, a copy of cancelled check or receipt from International IDD office is required.
AKTION CLUB report presented by Distinguished Past Lt. Governor Bob Bull. The club sponsored primarily by Killearn was nominated and won volunteer of the year award from the City of Tallahassee. They were given a $500 prize to be used for their charitable project at Christmas. A contingent will be attending the convention at Tampa and they could always use extra financial support from division clubs to assist with travel and housing expenses. Bob thanked those clubs who had made donations for this purpose last year. Bob has agreed to be the District Chair for Aktion Clubs for the state again this coming year.
OTHER DIVISION PROJECTS. Ben Fuller introduced the idea of sponsoring
"Nesting Rooms" or "Transitional Rooms" in the new wing being built at
Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center where a new childrens and
womens unit will be built by 2003. There will be six (6) of these rooms
as part of the newborn intensive care unit, similar to the one in the current
neonatal ward that the Killearn Club sponsored in 1991. It has performed
a great service and gotten a lot of publicity for Kiwanis. Fuller estimated
a cost of about $3500 per room and recommended that clubs put half of this
in their
budgets in the next two years until it is needed.
CLUB REPORTS were given by each club present. Havana is heavily involved in helping the City of Havana build a new library. Capital City announced a new location for meetings beginning August 6 at the Brokaw-McDougall House. Madison completed its annual Project Graduation at Madison High, collected 400 books for YCP1, and gave Key Club Scholarship. Monticello collected over 500 books for YCP1 and had two very successful fund raisers with onion sales and the watermelon run. Killearn had a very successful golf tournament in May, collected over 400 books for YCP1, and has a net increase in membership of 2. Northside in the middle of sponsoring two successful youth baseball teams. Tallahassee Club has donation over 400 books to Kids, inc, rebuilt two girls scout huts at Lake Talquin, awarded 8 $100 scholarships to high schoolers and a $1500 scholarship to TCC. They will be at the Orange Ave Post Office this week handing out 500 books to needy children. Finally, Lake Jackson plans a Homecoming Celebration party to recognize longtime and outstanding members.
