Archon

If the covenant had a leader, Cervus would be it by default.  One of the founding Magi, Cervus has been around since the beginning.  He has seen Magi come and go, problems rise and fall and the overall prosperity of the covenant rise and rise largely due to his decisions.

Compared to the other Archons, Cervus is the only one who really has any interest and opinion in the struggles of the covenant.  He is considered to be the most wise by the people & magi of the castle and the other Archons usually go along with Cervus’s recommendation.  In fact unless the matter is major, frequently Cervus is the only Archon to even pay attention.

For most decisions, Cervus values wisdom highly.  For this reason, he rarely makes a decision quickly, preferring to meditate for a while, examining all the options, considering the ramifications and later decisions that would have to be made.  The more important the decision, the longer he tends to mull on it thinking many moves ahead of where he is currently.

As part of this, he also values individual responsibility highly as well.  Cervus is realistic to know that his value as an Archon will fade as twilights approach.  For most things, he expects others need to be capable of making the astute choices well to take their place in the council.  As such in the last ten  years or so, he has been purposely taking a step back from some of the decisions, especially the non-critical ones.  He gets updates and views from council, but will allow the junior magi to come to a conclusion and so long as it doesn’t lead to disaster, and allow them to implement it.    He is interested to make sure the junior magi learn the difficult skill of good judgment and sometimes is prepared to allow failure to insure the lesson is driven home.  It is not unknown to have a plan crafted by the junior magi will fail, only to find out that Cervus has had a solution in the wings all the time, just waiting for the outcome of the first plan.

For the most part, having discussions with Cervus is difficult.  He tends let others do most of the talking and frequently doesn’t make decisions rapidly, so talking with him is at times similar to talking to a statue.  It seems obvious that he takes it all in, and then some, so that some are afraid to come to him before they have an airtight case, so they are not judged as being careless or foolhardy.

From a magical perspective, Cervus is an expert in Herbum & Animal magics.  He is very much in tune with the wilderness parts of the lands.   He loves those times where he leaves the covenant to be with and around the wilderness, although he does so less and less frequently as time progresses.

In Ars Magica: The movie, the role of Cervus would be played by: Sean Connery
