Annual Sleepover and Picnic
The Society gathered at the Historical Society of Berks County on August 12, 2011 for our annual sleepover. Before turning-in for the evening we were having fun and "Living the American Dream" with our guests. We were visited by Brig. Gen. John Gronski, Deputy Adjutant of the PA National Guard who talked to us about the brave men and women that protect us so we can live the American Dream. We were honored to present him with a Certificate of Appreciation for his service to our country. Josh Blay, Museum Curator, talked with us about ways our history is properly preserved so future generations can enjoy the artifacts and learn from them. We drew pictures of our service men and women protecting us and even acted out the play "Tea for Felicity" so our members would have an idea of what it was like to live in America in 1776. Before we settled into our sleeping bags to watch a movie on the big screen we made ice cream by shaking bags of cream inside bags of ice and salt....cold work...but very tasty!

After we cleaned up the next morning we headed over to the Berks County Heritage Center for a tour of the newly renovated Gruber Wagon Works and the Canal Museum. While we were there we held a brief ceremony to honor a Revolutionary War soldier that did not have a flag to mark his grave. After all our business was complete we settled in for a picnic lunch in the shade of the trees.
After a long day our true character comes out!

In the fall of 2011 we teamed up with the Berks County Chapter, DAR and the Historical Society of Berks County to collect used clothing and personal care items for homeless and needy veterans.
Over 1,000 lbs of clothing was collected and donated to help our veterans. Public response to the collection drive was terrific and this is now an ongoing community project.
