Team History (written by Michael King)

Team 1529 was founded in 2004 and is now in its 4th season.  The Team has grown from 5 members in 2004 to 20 in 2008 and is continuing to expand.  Recent plans include the attendance of the Purdue Boilermaker Regional and the Indiana Robotics Invitational.

2004-2005 School year

This was the founding year of the Southport Robotics CyberCards Team 1529. There were, in this premier year, three mentors and five students. The students consisted of: Joel Hallway (Chewy), Tyler Kulman, Katie Decker, Jordan Hallway, and Anthony Worley. The robot was basically a forklift. This was the first year of 3 vs. 3 alliance play in FIRST.

FRC Robotic game: Triple play

FRC Robot: Critical Mass

Tournaments attended: Boilermaker Regional and Indiana Robotics Invitational

2005-2006 School year

The second year of our team’s existence was the first year for our current mentor, Mr. Mike Taylor.  Under his direction, the team decided to spread their interests and explored the VEX robotics along with the FRC division. The CyberCards created two vex bots and one FRC robot. The Vex bots were designed by the whole team as a preparation for the 2006 season freshman: Michael King, Will Laws, Chris Dragomer, Corey Donavan (Domonic), and Eric Schilling. Will Laws designed the first website in this year. The robot this year was highly defensive, but also had high capabilities to be offensive. In addition, it had a 99.97% score rate. The original design called for a shooting mechanism but it was taken out before completion because of weight restrictions and lack of function. At competitions we won Best Button award and Defensive award.

Robotic Game: Aim High

FRC robot: Lucky (Rucky)

Tournaments attended: Boilermaker Regional, West Michigan Regional, Indiana Robotics Invitational

VEX bots: two unnamed robots (pool-ball bot, and racket ball bot)

VEX Events attended: WCC Half Pipe Hustle and Halo tourney

2006-2007 School year

During this third year, the team decided to get formally organized with its approach on team design. This was one of the most productive years that we had seen where the team had one focused goal. With its design the team functioned properly. It was a shame, for despite all the promotion of the robot, it failed and didn’t work properly playing the game. We had become so focused on the small things we missed the big picture. It was a learning experience for our team. The design originally incorporated a forklift but was taken out before completion. The VEX bot had been used again for team building earlier to assist freshmen. The freshmen of this year consisted of Carlee Andre, Daniel England, Josh Farrow, David Doody, Bret Heiniger, and Gabby Acevedo.

Robotic Game Name: Rack 'N' roll

FRC Robot: Lollipop

VEX robots: Scorpion, Wonder boy, Jordan's Bot, Mr. T's bot, chomp bot.

VEX Event: CyberCard Competition

2007-2008 School year

This year the team had a strong focus on experimenting with frame designs and base design. During this FRC build season bars of 80/20 were introduced as a light sturdy resourceful material. The base decided on was a pentagon. This was also the year the Hybrid mode was introduced. The team this year completely changed its power structure and its organization. This effort was carried out fruitfully. The game this year was called FIRST Overdrive. It was a racing game with 40” balls. The design this year was modeled after a Hungry Hippo (a children’s game). An idea of Michael King; although not his original concept, the team took off with the idea at a furious pace. At the Boilermaker Regional, we accomplished our first winning record with a record of 5/3, and placed 22 out of 48 teams.  We also won the Judges’ award for our initiative to get a  FIRST license plate for Indiana. The freshmen gained during this year were Emilee Vessell, Ryan Schilling (kid), and James Clark. The team also attended IRI and, amazingly, blew up an operator interface on the robot. This year CyberCards team 1529 and Warren Digital Goats team 829 made joint effort to create an exhibition tournament called C.A.G.E. match (Cards and Goats Exhibition)

Robotic Game name: First Overdrive
