Page > My Bicycles
There's
no earthly reason to have a page for bicycles that I've owned
or currently own, other than the fact that whenever I go to other's
pages, it is invariably the place I visit... So, I'm either "returning
the favor" or engaging in the same act of vanity.
But,
I've also ridden most of these pretty hard, tried out some things,
worn out some other things, repaired some bits and screwed some
other bits up. Maybe you can learn from my mistakes, or at least
chuckle at my ineptitude from the safety of your keyboard. So,
here's the batch.
Oh
yeah, all small photos can be clicked upon to open a larger version
- some will pop up in a new window, but I've been rewriting that
feature.
1983
Fisher Montare Mountain Bike
This
was my first mountain bike. It was purchased in December of 1983
from Gary Fisher, who had a shop with a showroom that measured
maybe 30' square. It was on the corner of Center Ave between San
Anselmo and Fairfax. Gary loaned me a rain jacket so I could test
ride it. My budget didn't allow for one of the expensive ones
-- the Mt Tam ran around $1300, but the Montare was a Japanese
made "production" mountain bike...

Mechanically
speaking, things changed quite a bit between 1983 and 1996...

Yes,
I do know how to control my background in a photo, but it just
didn't work out in these... They'll just have to do for right
now, mismatched tires and all.

Lemond Poprad Cyclocross
After
GW & I built up the Schwinn Crosscut into a trail-worthy bike,
I realized how much fun riding a cyclocross bicycle could be.
I'm not really a big air rowdy kind of rider, and to me the challenge
of riding a 'cross bike over trails was akin to light tackle fishing
in its need for technique, attention and sometimes, patience...

Bridgestone MB-Comp Single Speed Project
S/N - A02XXXX
I
snagged this bike in near-stock condition for $75 and then pulled
the beast apart to create a singlespeed MTB. It had very little
use on it, and I didn't really have use for an "old"
geared bike. It followed on the heels of the Whitehouse/Schwinn
Crosscut project, during which we achieved maximum bike for minimum
cash outlay. It was in that frame of mind that this project was
pursued...

Fixed
Gear Road Bike Project
A
combination of parts bin bloat and reading Sheldon Brown's pieces
on fixed gear riding probably had a lot to do with this project
getting underway...

Found
this Reynolds 531 tubed road bike languishing in the corner of
a garage sale. Although purchased for a quick clean & resell,
it seems to be taking on project status...

Zeus
650b Conversion Project
Just
beginning to figure out the math and other issues on this. It
was GW's "basket case" Zeus road frame - a project for
restoration which sat in his garage perhaps too long. Of interest
because it actually has a nearly complete Zeus component set.
However, the project took a bit of a left turn after readings
on the topic of 650b wheelsets, and...

Tracy's
2004 Bianchi Milano
After
having this model out for a few years, Bianchi finally made a
larger size in the drop bar frame, and in doing so finally made
a size which was appropriate for Tracy. This stylin' ride is excellent
for Farmer's Market runs and town errands. It's currently stock,
with the addition of the removeable front basket. At right, Tashi
checks to see if you can mount a trailer on this bike.

Rivendell Quickbeam
This
bicycle needs an actual writeup. This was the first run of Orange
Quickbeams. I'd been lamenting not nabbing one of the first ones
(which were green), and when the announcement was made I mailed
my deposit check that day. This one is a 58, and it's pretty much
stock. I've posted some photos in the Single
Speed Gallery, and wrote a bit in the Cyclofiend
blog as well.
