M2 20011996 Specialized Stumpjumper M2 Comp FS

Mechanically speaking, things changed quite a bit between 1983 and 1996...

This bike was obtained in an interesting manner -- won in a contest. Actually, this bike wasn't won. Rather, I'd won a Specialized'96 Ground Control full suspension model - a couple years before they had the FSR 4-Bar Linkage system available. I went down to the local shop and hefted one and left pretty unimpressed. When I called down to Specialized, they offered that I could pay the difference to whatever else I wanted. After weighing my options, I decided upon this model. It came with a Rock Shox Judy fork with the amazing travel of 63 mm's. Plus it had the Avid 2.0 brake levers, which I really liked.

The pictures in this section show the bike as it had evolved in May, 2001. There's nothing left from the original rendition except for the frame. It's gotten to be a typical "shop rat" bike, with a combination of lusted-after parts and free bits from reps. Still, there's nothing on it that I wouldn't pay for. Plus, it's pretty solid in terms of reliable operation. As of June, the only thing I'm still mucking* around with is the Manitou Mars C shock, but that's pretty much fine tuning at this point.

* Mars Mucking Update - Pressure Question:
Despite the fact that the instruction booklet gives a MAX pressure of 140 psi, I received the following email in return to a question posed through the Answer website:

180 is the max. You will probably want it around 150psi.

* More Mars Mucking occurs during the frame replacement...

M2 Crack DetailUPDATE 05/02:
Frame Cracked at right chainstay, right at the weld for the chainstay brace - replaced under warranty with Stumpjumper M4. But, getting the M4 up and running becomes a litany of small details and other parts that all seemed to have worn out at the same time.
