The 2006 SlamMN! Poetry Slam Team

Cynthia French

Cynthia has recently realized that her life is big enough for both poetry and roller derby. If she’s not home, you can most likely find her at a coffee shop, a literary arts event, an Irish pub or a roller rink. Her quad speed skates are called “Firecrackers” and she’s was kind of taken in by their promise to be “explosively fast skates,” in not so different a manner that cats are taken by reflections on the wall and moths.

Cynthia has been performing her poetry for over 8 years from California to England. This year she was the Minnesota Individual Slam Champion and competed at the Individual World Poetry Slam, went on a midwest performance tour with the amazing Amy Steinberg and coordinated Art Slam, a new teen program for visual arts and spoken word. She continues to teach workshops and perform at college campuses, community centers and schools.

Cynthia is the longest running Slam Master in SlamMN! history. This year is her third time as a member of the SlamMN! team, and her 6th time attending the National Poetry Slam. In 2002, she coordinated the whole shi-bang, which rocked Minneapolis for 6 days. Cynthia has her MFA in Writing from Hamline University and is working on her next book of poetry, Venice is Sinking, which is due out this year.

homeless (ryan k) was born in Minneapolis in 1987, and up to this moment of 2006 has never written in the third person. he loves q-tips and hates when people read into things too much. he also has a hard time accepting help, favors and love from other people. he knows he needs to work on that. he likes pictures because they stop time. he does not like dramatic people. sometimes he forgets that he is tall. he never forgets that he is lanky. ryan k can be found online at myspace.com/homelessryank where you should be his friend. as long as people like andy milonakis and howard stern get paid more money than he does to speak, ryan k will continue writing and continue speaking until people understand what it is to listen. he is currently in the process of trying to save the world while knowing that he can?t. he understands that this poses a problem. he knows he needs to work on that too. he hopes you were grateful for everything you have today, and that you will seek him out and speak with him. he would like that very much.
Tom Reed
tomreedv.1.0@gmail.com

Tom Reed was nearly born in the back of a pickup truck on the way to the hospital after his mother unsuccessfully tried to deliver him at home - 30 miles from the nearest doctor. His literal ass-first entrance into the world may or may not have anything to do with the fact that Tom has always had a passion for performance of almost any kind. His experience in front of audiences includes theatre, speech, debate, choir, storytelling, a little opera and most recently Slam! (obviously). Since graduating from college in 2004, Tom has worked for an environmental advocacy nonprofit. If you would like to pay him to perform anything anywhere he would be delighted.

Michael Shaeffer
arctickle@hotmail.com

Michael hails from Flandreau, South Dakota, and brings in some mad precipitation from Alaska as well. After teaching high school English and theatre in the Bush for five years, he has returned to the Midwest to deal out blackjack, poker and beefy, irreverent rhymes.
His one-man show, Tantrums, Testicles, and Trojans, has enjoyed a tour of the Fringe Festival, Augustana College, Moorhead and SDSU’s Summer Theatre Festival. MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL magazine describes Mike as “inexplicable but totally hilarious.” Flirt with him at arctickle@hotmail.com. He has two slam poetry CDs, and you can check out his OTHER INK at the online Alaskan punk zine, www.akink.org.

(Extremely Zealous Rhyme Advocate) is the mothafuckin man! He hosts a biweekly open mic called Five Minutes of Fame at Kieran’s Irish Pub (330 S. 2nd Ave. in downtown Minneapolis) for those of you who live in the Twin Cities area.

His first CD, WHY WON’T MORE OF YOU HAVE SEX WITH ME? is available in all Minnesota Cheapo Discs, in either the Local or the Hip-Hop section. The album is an eclectic mix of hip-hop, spoken word, experimental rock and more.

As a spoken word artist, EZRA was a member of the 2004 MN Slam Team (check out slammn.org for more on the slam), and has also opened for acts such as Heiruspecs, Edupoetic Enterbrainment and California-based rapper Deploi, among others.

As a member of the Vibin’ Collective, EZRA also performed at the 2004 Twin Cities Celebration of Hip-Hop, which featured Cee-Lo, Jean Grae, The C.O.R.E., Kanser and more.

To see/hear EZRA’s spoken word, check out gambitparty.net. EZRA is currently working on three albums: I THINK, THEREFORE IT IS..., a full-length hip-hop album; TEN, a spoken word EP; and an as-yet-untitled experimental rock album with his duo VAS DEFERENZ, all to be released in the next year or so.

To be continued...
