Etowah Valley Country Club & Resort

Adrienne and I were invited by Roger and Pam Williams to participate in a couple's golf tournament at Etowah Valley Country Club and Resort in Etowah, NC. Etowah is about 15 miles west of Hendersonville, NC on highway US 64. It's only about a 4-hour drive from Charleston, SC to Etowah.

We were all going to leave early Thursday morning and play a practice round that afternoon, but unfortunately Roger had to stay in town to finish some business. Anyway, the three of us made it to Etowah Valley, checked in and played 18 holes of golf. In case you have never been there, Etowah has three separate nine-hole courses. We played the West and North courses. Later that evening we had dinner reservations for 8:00 PM at the club's restaurant. Roger finally showed up about 8:15 and joined us for dinner and a few cocktails.

The next day we had a 9:30 tee time to play the North and South courses. None of us played real well but we had a good time. Here is a picture of Roger and Pam on the 5th hole of the North Course. After we finished 18 holes, our wife’s went to the room to freshen up for a social and putting contest scheduled for later that afternoon. Not to keen on attending a social, Roger and I went out and played another nine holes on the West course. We finished just in time to join our wife’s for the putting contest. Even though we didn’t win anything, we had a great time.

Earlier that afternoon, our wife’s had met this Canadian couple, Gus and Blanche, at the social. We all got together in the lounge and had a few drinks before returning to the rooms to get ready for the barbeque. Since all of our rooms were within a stone’s throw of each other, we had a couple of cocktails before leaving for the barbeque.

The barbeque was held at the club’s pavilion. The food was great and there was even a band for entertainment and dancing. The band let me sing a Hank Williams song with them and I think most everyone seemed to enjoy our rendition of You’re Cheating Heart. Later in the evening, Gus got himself a partner and challenged Roger and I to a game of horseshoes. Roger and I didn’t realize that Gus threw a pretty good shoe. We lost 13 to 21. Poor Roger and I didn’t even know they made shoes for horses. After several hours of dancing, singing, drinking, drinking, and more drinking, we made our way back to the room.

Saturday, the 1st day of the tournament Roger and I woke up feeling pretty hung over. We all went to breakfast hoping we would feel better after we got some food in our stomachs. Guess what…..it didn’t work. To make a long story short, none of us played well. I can’t remember what Roger and his wife shot, but Adrienne and I shot 74. Unfortunately this put Adrienne and I into the 1st flight for the second round. As far as I was concerned there were only three good things that happened on Saturday. One, Adrienne beat out Blanche for the ladies closest to the pin. Two I won $52.00 in net skins, and three, Roger and I finally got to take a nap before dinner. Roger said he didn’t get any sleep between me waking him up to see if he wanted a beer or his wife waking him to ask him if he felt OK.

The second round was Captain’s Choice, no handicap. We were 12 shots out of the lead and had no chance of catching golfer’s with a 4 and 13 handicap respectively. We finished the second round with a 78 and managed to move ahead of one couple. After having lunch, Roger and Pam left for home. We stayed to get our prizes from Saturday’s round and left after the awards ceremony. We were back home by 7:15 PM.

A special thanks to Roger and Pam for the invite. We had a great time.
