This is Dave. Although he has been working with computers and
programming since 1970, Dave usually adopts technology later than everybody
else, generally when the bugs have been worked out and the prices are lower.
Dave’s hobbies are biking and digital video
production. He also reads a lot. Current books: introductions to
AJAX; fossilized dinosaur pathology.
This is Dave’s family. From L to R they are:
Dvorit, Sam, Dave, Gale, Max.
Dave’s wife and children generally do whatever they want to do.
Dave is dressed up for riding a bike.
Although it appears to be a Trek outfit,
in fact, Dave owns a 1971 Peugeot PX-10E and a 2002 Bianchi Eros.
He uses the former for errands and the latter for serious rides.
During the warm months, his favorite weekend ride is about 40 miles long.
He follows Saint Charles Road from beginning to end, where there is nothing
to do but turn around. His average speed is now 15.5 miles per hour.
Dave is working on improving his speed and endurance (see next panel). He tries
to observe the training recommendations of Friel in Cycling Past 50.
In 2002, Dave had congestive heart failure caused by
a severe mitral valve prolapse. It turned out that a group of
chordae tendinae on the P2 segment of the anterior leaflet
had become severed!
The valve repair technique, called
annuloplasty, was performed at New York University Medical Center.
The surgeon used minimally-invasive techniques, which allowed Dave to
recover in three weeks. Dave is fine now. He has to maintain his physical
activity to keep the heart strong, and found biking more congenial than
treadmills at the health club.
In 2003, Dave bought Gale a Toyota Prius hybrid-electric, which contains a small gasoline
engine, 120 pounds of Ni-Cd batteries, and electric motors in the wheels. It
drives like a three-thousand-pound golf cart. Dave enjoys trying to out-wit the
engine computer in order to drive as fast as possible using only battery power.
The Prius has recently become the favorite of the Beautiful People. There was a six-month
waiting period for the 2004 model. A recent article in Scientific American
showed that the hybrid architecture is the most cost-effective low-emission solution
that we are ever likely to drive. This car averages 45 miles per gallon on the highway,
but secondary road trips easily average 55 mpg.
Somebody stole Dave’s lawn mower so he bought this new one at
Sears. It is designed to start on the first pull, but in practice
it takes about fifty pulls. Hooray for property insurance!
Somebody stole Dave’s snow blower so he bought this new one at
Sears. Unfortunately, it rarely snows in Illinois anymore.
Hooray for property insurance!
Later, Dave thought somebody stole his leaf blower so he bought this
new one at Sears, but it turned out he misplaced the old one, so now
he has two of them.
