The Gospel According to Jim
No, I have not found a new Gnostic Gospel. My wife and I were watching "According to Jim" the other night. For those who don't watch it, the show is about Jim(Jim Belushi) and his family. He has a beautiful wife and 3 young kids. The show follows a fairly standard sitcom formula: bumbling, idiotic husband, and pretty, smart, sensible wife that keeps everything running smoothly. It is nothing new, but it can be pretty funny. Jim's brother-in-law that works with him is hilarious.

Anyway, the reason I bring it up is that in this episode, Jim was supposed to get a vasectomy. When the show began, I am thinking, "Here we go another nonchalant snip and I'm sterile." This is usually how T.V. deals with this issue, no big deal. But what happened was that Jim couldn't go through with it. He tells his wife that "God doesn't like you messing with His handiwork." I thought that was a pretty good line. So what ends up happening is that his wife realizes she wants to have another baby.

Don't get me wrong, this show is not "Touched by an Angel". But I thought that they went against the grain on this issue. Jim's family already had more kids than the courteous limit of 2.2. Now they not only decide not to sterilize themselves but to, can you believe it, have an over the top fourth child. Kudos to the writers of "According to Jim" for having the courage to defy the PC police.

Comments:
I agree. I never have watched the show but caught the last ten minutes at about the point where the wife was ranting about Jim not going through with it and having her attention caught by the adorable baby. I was struck that the choices were not culturally popular. Also against the grain was the wife's friend who was left calling after the baby, "I could have one of you but I chose a career instead. And I'm fulfilled." Rarely is that choice pointed out. Even more rarely is one left with the feeling that the career choice might not be the fulfilling one as happened in that brief moment.

Thanks for checking in Julie. I have not been posting as much as I had hoped when I started the blog. Part of my problem is that I feel I should post only if I have something profound to say, which isn't often lately. BTW, that wasn't the wife's friend, it was her sister. She is often the brunt of jokes because she cannot keep a boyfriend.

Well you can't be profound ALL of the time! I, on the other hand, am rarely profound but specialize in finding you profound types to tell everyone else to read. That leaves me with a whole lotta material depending on what hits me right.

I panicked when I heard about this episode, mainly because the announcer says, "Jim's getting fixed." So, perhaps there is some hope for ABC.

I don't watch much TV< but I am heartened to know that some script writer was able to get a counter cultural comment in there! hope for hollywood yet.
