Mountain Surname Project
The objective of the Mountain Surname
project is to search for links between different lines with the Mountain
surname using both conventional genealogy and genetic genealogy (DNA).
A
Mountain surname DNA project has been set up with Relative Genetics,
Inc. but DNA results from other companies are welcome. Project
members are also encouraged to submit their DNA results to the publicly
accessible Y-search database.
The test is quite easy, just wipe the inside of your mouth with cotton
swabs supplied in the test kit and mail the swabs to the testing
laboratory. DNA donor identities will be kept confidential.
The Mountain surname is found in both
Ireland and England. Griffiths Valuation (1848-1853) lists 45
Mountain households in Ireland with most located in counties Cork and
Waterford. The 1841 British census lists 1,213 Mountain households
with the largest number located in Yorkshire.
Additions, corrections, and
suggestions for this website are always welcome. We are also looking for
volunteers to help research the Michael Mountain and Patrick James
Mountain lines.
