The paintings in our Micromineral Art Gallery are all the works of Dr. David Babulski. All of the paintings are executed in transparent watercolor, acrylic gouache and colored pencil. Mineral specimens for the paintings are all micromounts from the personal collection of Dr. Babulski. All the paintings are done from the microscope at a magnification of 20X to 75X. A Motic K400 stereo microscope fitted with a Camera Lucida and some custom made components is the primary optical tool used in creating the paintings. An Edmund Scientific trinocular microscope is fitted with a Nikon camera to obtain 35mm color reference slides of the microminerals used when creating the paintings. The objective of these paintings is to capture the brilliant colors and vibrant beauty of microminerals in a photo realistic style with just a touch of artistic interpretation. As much as possible, the paintings capture how the microminerals appear under the microscope. Some original paintings have been sold and are in collections throughout the United States. All original art is professionally
framed with archival materials in the unique Crystal Pocket studios
style. As an added bonus, each painting is supplied with a 5 X 7 inch
shadow box frame containing the actual specimen from which the painting
and an information sheet that describes the minerals portrayed in the
painting. We will be adding new watercolors and prints to our gallery,
as they become available.
