Are you related to the Dulany family?
Dulany : THE NAME n its form, Delaney is a Norman name, form De
l'aunaie, meaning "from the alder grove.' and doubtless some of those
bearing the name in Ireland are of Norman stock. However, in the
majority of cases it was adopted as the anglicized form of the original
Irish O'Dubhslaine the word dubh, meaning 'black,' and slan, meaning
'defiance' or possibly taken from Slaine, a topographical name which
most likely refers to the River Slaney. The name evolved from
O'Dubhshlaine to O'Dulany to finally Delany, although the name is found
in old records with the various spellings of O'Delany, Delane, and
Dillane.
In modern America the forms used are mostly Delany. Dulany, Delaney,
and Dulaney. It is interesting to note that the name has changed from
Delany to Dulany to Delaney to Dulaney all in the same generation. One
child within the family carrys the surname of Dulany, while another
another carrys the name Delany. Generally, there areseveral reasons for
the change in name patterns. Officials who were writing the names into
public records, such as census, land records, marriage and death records
wrote them as they thought they should have been spelled. Which makes
the job of tracing ones family roots very difficult and confusing.
The second reason for name changes comes from within the family unit
itself. Events, whether internal or external in nature, play a large
part in how family members interact with each other. Name changes where
the easiest way in which to rebel or disassociate oneself from dis-agreeable
situations. And it was certainly much easier to change a name then, than
it is now. For example, Joseph, Daniel, and Thomas Delany changed their
name to Dulany after their arrival in the colonies. It has been said
that they disapproved of their father's marriage to Sarah, thus they
changed their nameto show their disapproval. Descendants of Thomas
Delany would change their name again after the Revolutionary War, hoping
to disassociate themselves from their Loyalist cousins of Maryland. Many
family members added the 'e' to the name or took the Irish spelling of
the name, Delany/Delaney.
ORIGINS
"Traditionally, the Delany clan was said to have been descended from
one of the ancient clans of septs which migrated to Ossory, in the
County Laoightis, Ireland, with King Herman, one of the five sons of
Melisius, from Spain 1000 years before the birth of Christ. He was king
and monarch of all Ireland and resided in Ossory at a place called
Rathbeagh, pronounced "Rawbay." Ancient Ossory is now County Kilkenny,
southern Tipperary, and the Barony of Upper Ossory, in Queen's County."
(Dulany-Furlong, pg.4)
The home of the O'Delany's was Tuath-Na-Toraidh, when translated
means 'the people of the district of the towers.' Tuath-Na-Toraidh was
also located in Ossory, in fact, within miles of Rathbeagh. "The
O'Delanys were chiefs of the territory called Coilluachtarach, now known
as Upperwoods, at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, near the
source of the rivers Nore and Barrow in County Lexis." (Dulany-Furlong,
pg. 5) Today the name is prominent in the four baronies of Queen's
County (now Leix) and in the five baronies of County Kilkenny.
The O'Delany Clan was a social and political force in Queen's County
and was of ancient origin, Irish records mention Felix o'Dulany, a
Cistercian monk, who was Bishop of Ossory from 1173 to 1202. He built
the Cathedral of St, Canice in Kilkenny and he was interred at Jerpoint
Abbey. ( Source: William M.Hennessy, The Annals of Loch Ce,Kraus
Reprint, Ltd., 1965, Vol. 1., pg. 223) The fact that Felix O'Dulany was
the Bishop of Ossory presents evidence that the family was of high
standing in the community, The hierachy of Ireland in those times was
composed from the sons of the kings and chiefs of the area. And
accordingly, "there was no other country in which purity of blood was so
severely guarded as in Ireland, the kings and chiefs to the humblest in
the clans being of the same blood and held in strict accountability for
the preservation in all its purity." ( B.L. Dulaney, Something About the
Dulaney (Dulany) Familyand a Sketch of the Southern Cobb Family
1700-1920, Washington D.C. pg. 13)
The bard O'herrian, who died in 1420, in his topographical poem
enumerating the Munster clans, refers to the Chiefs of the O'Dulanys:
(Dulany-Furlong, pg. 5)
High chief of the productive territory,
From the delightful Coil Oughterugh
Is O'Dubhlaine, the man of hospitality,
From the mountains of the most delightful.
Thomas Delany's own family seems to have had social and political
prominence in Ireland. Daniel Delany, his brother, was born in Queen's
County, Ireland and is recorded dying in the year 1750. It is said he
married into the "Uniacke' family, who like the O'Dulany clan were of
ancient origin and highly distinguished in both England and Ireland. His
nephew, Dr. Patrick Delany, was an alumni of "Trinity College, Dublin,
Chancellor of the Christ Church, prebendary od Saint Patrick's Cathedral
(Protestant), Dean of Down. A man of much knowledge and an author, he
was a close friend to Jonathan Swift. His wife wife, Mary (Granville)
was the niece of the first Lord Landsdowne, and a special friend of
Queen Charlotte, wife of George III." (Dulany-Furlong, pg. 5-6)
America
The sons of Thomas Dulany arrived in Port Tobacco, Maryland in April
of 1703. Joseph, Daniel, and William were bound in articles of
redemption to the captain of the ship that had transported they to the
Colonies. It was the right of the captain to sale at his own discretion
these articles and make them indentured servants to the buyer. However,
it appears that they made satisfactory arrangements upon their arrival
for there is no evidence that they were indentured to any resident or
planter in the Maryland area. Evidently, Joseph obtained and served an
apprenticeship in a local doctor's office, William taught school, and
Daniel studiedlaw in the office of Col. George Plater of Saint Mary's
County, Maryland.
Thomas Delany, Sarah his wife and his son, Thomas arrived in Maryland
in 1709. According to an entry in the MarylandCalender of Wills, Thomas
Delany, age 19 witnessed and signed a will of one of the crewman of the
vessel Mary out of London, England in the year 1709. The will was later
recorded and probated in Maryland that year. Settling in Port tobacco
and later Joppa, Maryland, the county seat of Maryland. Thomas changed
his name to Dulany, to conform with his three son's name who had arrived
before him.
Thomas Delany/Dulany's descendants are now spread across America.
Descendents of a richIrish heritage. Possibly the descendents of kings
and certainly, the descendents of educated and enlightened men who
helped to ensure the birth of a new nation. Been to Joe Dulany's

Are you related to the Dulany family? Yes. I am descended from Thomas
Delany and wife Sarah of Co. Laois, IRE. who arrived in Maryland with
son Thomas about 1704 and settled in Port Tobacco. There were 3 other
sons who preceeded the father to Maryland -- William, Joseph and Daniel.
Thomas and Sarah's son Dennis I Dulany (m. Easter Fugate) is my 4th ggf.
Dennis' son Dennis II (m. Nancy Fox)is my 3rd ggf. The line continues
through Dennis II's son Samuel(m.Sarah Crayne)and his son John (m.Emily
Truman) to John's son Albert (m.Clara Jewett) and thence to my father,
Sherman Albert Delaney (m.Corinne Constant).
I am seeking specific information about the family in IRE prior to
Thomas' emigration -- What town was he from? What was Sarah's surname?
From what port did they sail?
Were they landowners?
Any and all info will be most welcomed.

Comments: Just a thought, I see you have suscribed to the commercial
rendering of the surname, however i dont believe the Slaney part, indeed
Dubh is Irish for Black, however the second half is also an Irish term
meaning defiance or challenge, as proven by the argent (silver) within
the coat-of-arms.
Another point is the hugenot legend, Gideon DeLaune was the Duke of
Normandy, as such, a Catholic. Thomas was protestant, his brother a Dean
of the Church of Ireland (not northern irish scottish-methodist). This
is from an era when the Catholic church held great political sway, for
that reason alone I seriously doubt the DeLaune connection.

at to find info on us.I do know that my line runs back to Thomas from
Ireland,I just have one brick wall and it is Fielding Dulaney, son of
Joseph Roberts Dulaney and Nancy Field.Fielding's three
sons,William,John Paul and Daniel came to Texas in 1846 with the Peters
Colonist.I am from Williams line,he married Laura Nelms and they had
James Henry(Doc) Dulaney in 1866 who was the postmaster in Leakey,Texas
for over 40 years.Doc had a son named Almarine Gossett Dulaney Sr.,my
dad is the Jr.Al Dulaney(my dad)is a saddlemaker there in Texas and no
doubt he inherited the skill from the Nelms side of the family,I
think.God,you must be bored with this,so I apologize for the
rambling, but as I said,I am overwhelmed. Please, any info you may be able
to provide would be great.Thank you ever so much,Deb

My great grandfather was Lewis Barnes Dulaney, s/of Benjamin Lewis
Dulaney and Judith Barnes. If one follow this back to Thomas, born in

We haven't met yet, but I have visited your fantastic site many times.
My name is Joe Dulany. You have had some communication with a couple of
members of my family. Ron and Mary Dulany my grandparents, and Dan
Dulany is my uncle. Dan and I have been working feverishly on an MSN Web
Community. It's kind of tough to work with, because they won't accept
many of the special html codes. I really like your site! You obviously
put a lot of time and effort into it each week!
I saw your Dulany links page, and I thought you might be interested
in adding our button to your website. It's at the top of this email. We
have many recent and old photos of our family. We have a link to your
site on our homepage, but I'll have to get that cool banner you've made
and put it on instead! In case something should happen to the URL of our
site to keep it from registering when this email gets to you (that has
happened to me occasionally), it's: www.mccartney.freeurl.com (or)
http://communities.msn.com/themccartneyhaydulanylewisfamilywebsite (This
one is a little faster, since it doesn't have to go through the
redirection process.)
One day, it would be nice to take our web site aspirations out of the
"free web space" realm, and onto a web server that will allow us to
upload from MS Front Page! Are there any free or very inexpensive ones
that you know of that permit doing that, or that don't change your html
code when you paste it in? Any wisdom you can share would be helpful. If
you decide to add our site to your links page, we are grateful. If not,
it's always nice talking with another Dulany. Dulanys are, after all,
very special people! :o)
This is a great site, I especially like the photo and family e-mail
sections.
Are you related to the Dulany family?
Yes. I was just recently told that I am a descendent of Margaret

Alabama, and via internet search, desc of Daniel and Priscilla (White)

Thanks, I enjoy your site. I had no idea there were so many Dulanys.
The Sriners are not nearly so widespread. The Dulany name seems to carry
with it a great deal of pride. I remember my grandfather, George W.

Dulany" I wish I would have had more time with him. He died almost 50

Dave, great website....it seems DULANY/DULANEY name is found in
U.S.A. only, it does not appear in Ireland today, and I have seen it no
place else. And it would appear any arrivals after late 1700's were
listed as Delaney. The name seems to change to DEL... in Ireland in the
1700's. Do you have any more on this? Cheers, John Delaney.
Dave, I was born in Australia, but spent most of my life Stateside,
(mostly Hawaii & the West Coast). Back here for a year now, to see how
it feels. I miss America. Living in Sydney's north shore (Newport) and a
farm at Jilliby about 75mins. north. I take it from the photos you're
somewhere in the N.E.??
The name is spelt with the 'U' in Ireland in the early days and around
1700's, it seems those that migrated to the States in the 1700's took
the spelling 'Dulany/ey with them. During the early 1800's it was more 'Anglicised'
to DElany/ey and thus those immigrants were reported as DElaneys upon
arrival.
Two interesting points......
While in Ireland recently I noticed that the name is pronounced DU-lany
despite now being spelt DElany, my friends and relatives there all said
that the spelling 'DULANY' is closer to the pronunciation and is how it
should be spelt when anglicised.
And I remember when I was young we were known as DULANYs not Delanys,
everyone particularly the older people placed emphasis on the DU.
Also Gravestones in the old cemetaries in Ireland show the spelling
change occuring in the 1700's to DELaney, in both Protestant and
Catholic graveyards.
The folks in the Slieve Bloom Mountains, home of our clan, have a saying
of the Dulanys & Delanys who are buried in the protestant graveyards and
that is: "they took the soup!" Have you heard the explanation of this?
Keep in touch, John D.
In an earlier Famine (not the potato famine) the English rulers and
Landlords offered food, (grain-meal soup was one such food), to the
starving Tenants and Peasants on the condition that they renounce their
Catholic faith, and join the church of England (called Church of Ireland
in Eire). Those that did so are said to 'have taken the soup'.
1.....jd....
Dave, you would love Co. Laois and the Slieve Bloom Mts. The DELANEY
name as it is today, is centered around Mountrath, still lots of them
there and all great people. Camross, just west of Mountrath, at the foot
of the Mts. is most likely the place where your Dulany ancestors came
from. The name is found in both Graveyards, and I believe it was these
families that emigrated to America prior to, and after the War of
Independence. I'm sure you will feel a deep connection to Ireland if you
spend some time in those beautiful Churchyards, surrounded by that
special scenery and its magic. I'm not a strong believer in things
mystical, but I felt as tho' I was at home there. Never once had the
feel I was in another land. You will have a whole new sense of your
ancestory and Irishness after you visit, be sure to take your children
along. To feel how our family has touched history for so long instills a
new confidence in oneself. Despite the spelling, whether it be Du or De
or y or ey, we are all one family with so much to be proud of. Best
Wishes, John Delaney.

Many researchers have written that Daniel Dulaney, 4th. generation.,
son of the Hon. Daniel Dulaney and Rebecca Tasker had raised a family in
S. C. and then left them all to migrate to Alabama, around 1820 just for
him to go to England to die in 1824.
Evidently those writers have never seen this old news article: From
Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, # 13, Page 210. (England).
A letter from R. A. Austin Leigh, Eton College, July 18 1905, printed in
the Eton College Chronicle "Americans at Eton in Colonial Days" ------
of Daniel Dulaney, entered July 10, 1762, son of Hon. Daniel Dulany (the
younger) and Rebecca Tasker his wife, was born in Annapolis, Province of
Maryland about 1750 and in July 1761 was taken by his father to be
educated . He lived for many years in Downing Street, London and Patcham,
Sussex. He never returned to America but once after he was taken to
England to be educated and that was in 1785 when he paid a visit to his
only brother, Colonel Benjamin Tasker Dulaney of Fairfax County,
Virginia, U.S.A."
General George Washingington in his diary thus writes: " Thursday,
December 22, 1785, at Mt. Vernon, went a fox hunting with the gentlemen
who came here yesterday, December 21, 1785, Daniel Dulaney, Jr., the son
and Benjamin Tasker Dulaney, and Samuel Houson, Thos. Houson, Phillip
Alexander together with Ferdinando Washington and a mr. Shaw."
Mr Dulaney: He died in 1824 and was buried as was his mother at
parish Church at patcham or Patching. mr. Dulany , Jr. was one of the
Ablest lawyers in the Province of maryland and being a loyalist had a
large estate in Maryland confiscated in 1781 and this is one of the
reasons why his eldest son Daniel dulany, the 3rd. chose England as his
home.
Benjamin Tasker Dulany, son of Daniel Dulany the younger. (2nd) was a
personal friend of General George Washington who made him his aide.
The other Daniel Dulaney, b about 1750, was home in America meanwhile,
He was in the American Revolution and recieved a bounty grant in
Washington Co., Ga.. He married Priscilla White who was born in S. C.,
1755, about 1775 and began raising a large family. Daniel appears on
both Wilkes Co., Ga. and Pendleton District, S. C. in the late 1700's
because that part of S. C that is now, Oconee Co. . was claimed by
Georgia.
Please, will someone now help us try to establish the real parents of
Daniel Dulaney of Pendleton ? Thank you, Melba Lambert Straigis,
ggggrandaughter of Daniel and Priscilla White Dulaney.

The Delany Family Name - As yet I know very little of the origin of
the name Delany. I have traced back to my ggg grandfather "John Delany".
Family gossip says he came to England c. 1852 with his son William.
William was born in 1843, probably in Waterford, Ireland. What happened
to John's wife or the rest of the family is as yet unclear.
I presume the name is a variation of Delaney, which is a far more common
spelling. Only 10% have no 'e' before the 'y'. I have had some
information from Bob Duggan saying that the spellings Dulaney and
Delaney are quite interchangeable in Ireland and that it may be an
anglicised version of the French DeLaun(e).
This is very much speculation at present and so if anyone has any
information I would be grateful if they could mail me. Paul M Delany

must say I am impressed. I'll spend some more time looking at it in the
future. As you notice, my first name is Dulany. My mother's maiden name

have a very old Dulany book around and I will compare it to some of your
information to see where I fit in. Thanks for an informative site.
Dulany F. Sriner
I was interested in the information you had on the Dulany web site.
My grandfather was George W. Dulany born 1885. His father was a Daniel
Dulany. From recounted stories we migrated here from France with the
French Hougonauts (sp) WE came over with the Mohan and Moffet families
and we settled in and around Hannibal MO. I assume there is a connection
to the Daniel Dulany you noted.
Any information you have would be appreciated. Most of the web site's
ancestry comes from Ireland which doesn't seem to correlate with mine. I
understood that we were a ruling family in France the name duLany
referred to the province of Lany. We were protestants and the king was
returning to Catholicism. We were too powerful to be killed so we were
allowed to migrate to America. I further understood that those who went
back to Catholicism put an e in there name (Dulaney) and the Delaneys
were another linage all together originating in Ireland. Can you confirm
or contradict any of this information. I have not researched it. It was
simply "handed down"

Hi there,
Hope you don't mind this message, but I found your email address on
the Delaney home page guest book and wanted to just say hi. I'm a 42
year old software engineer living in Indiana, USA,and
just now getting hooked by the geneology bug. I've made contacts so far
with Delaneys all over the world and would love to hear from any of you.
So far it seems the Delaneys have made it to South Africa, Argentina,
Australia, Canada, England, France, and in the US The Carolinas,
Louisiana, Wisconsin, in
addition to New York and Pennsylvania! We're everywhere!
A little about my branch: I'm decended from James Delaney and Maria
Nash of Castlecomer, Kilkenny, Ireland. I have a copy of our tree
available to anyone interested in Word, Text, or Gedcom format. I've got
some info on the South African branch (O'Keefe), and Delaneys mostly in
eastern Pennsylvania.
I would love to get to know any an all of you, especially any of you
who are working on your (our) family geneology. I won't make a mass
mailing like this again, because I know how annoying unsolicited email
can be. Just reply sometime and we'll see what we can learn.
Any links to other Delaney web pages would be great, and I'm looking
for a good scan of the Delaney coat of arms for my own page.
Happy New Year!

I'm sure this is English in origin, I didn't mean to infer that it
was in any way, Irish. The main problem is that the name has gone
through so many different spellings. Thomas Dulany, who seems to be the
earliest concrete holder, supposedly was Delany, Daniel, the Elder
changed it to Dulany when he arrived in Maryland and finally the extra e
(i.e. Dulaney/Delaney) was added in the 1800's, but even that has holes
in it because folks back in Ireland spell it that way too. I have
several instances of the same person spelling it differently. It's all
exasperating! Daniel was a loyalist and a crown officeholder, so I'm
sure the COA was in recognition for "services rendered" in the colonial
government.
I have a woman who has some dates on Gideon DeLaune (sp?). She dates
him back through England and even offers dates. From my research, he was
a crony of William of Orange and actually was a Duke of Normandy. Even
so, I know Dulany's predate his name also, so I have kind of discounted
him. The three brothers who came over in 1703 were the first, their
father, Thomas, along with two sons (Dennis & Thomas Jr.) and a daughter
(Elizabeth) and perhaps a second wife (Sarah) arrived at Port Tobacco,
Maryland in 1706, this is documented in the Maryland State Archives
because Thomas Jr. witnessed a sailors will on the voyage (the ship's
name was the Mary out of London.).
But Maryland was not the only place our family arrived at, there was
a Patrick Dulany who was in a land deal with Daniel the elder, I don't
know for sure, but he may be a cousin by Thomas's brother Daniel who
remained in Ireland.
The English Dulany's come from Daniel Jr. who fled from the Pendleton
District of South Carolina about the time hostilities broke out in 1776.
He was a close friend to the royal family and a famous London Barrister.
He lived on Downing Street and had a daughter who served as a
lady-in-waiting to the Queen. He lost all of the property his father and
grandfather has amassed in the American Colonies, which were massive.
Daniel's family were mostly loyalists whereas others went the other way.
George Washington was a family friend, he even rode "to hounds" with
Daniel Jr. when he visited Benjamin in Alexandria (his only return to
the America's.). The horse that George rode throughout the war was owned
by Dr. Benjamin Dulaney, in his journals he thanks him for it's use.
Sorry, I'm getting a bit windy..hope to have my webpage up soon.

the house stood where Bainbridge Hall Wing #4 is. The Delany
coat-of-arms that you are linked to is different than Daniel's which is
a cheetah (i'm guessing) over a group of diamonds in a cross pattern. I
believe it is of english rather than Irish origin. Daniel was a
loyalist, as was his son and grandson, who fled to England during the
revolution, in turn loosing near 1/4 of Maryland which he owned. George
Washington was a Dulany friend, eating more at their home more than at
Mt. Vernon. The horse he rode during the rev. war was owned by the
Dulany's and returned after the war. A Dulany daughter was lady in
waiting to Queen Mary, and they lived at Downing Street. You should add
the spelling of my last name to your list, I too am related to the
Dulany's of Virginia, my great grandfather emigrated from Virginia to
Ohio in the 1860's. I don't know where the extra "e" came from. My dad
