EXPECTATIONS OF MEMBERSHIP

Members of Company C portray the Maryland Confederate soldier as he would have lived and fought during the middle to late chapters of the war.  Some of today's Company C members can proudly claim ancestors who fought with the original Company C, 2nd  Maryland Infantry.  Company C actively recruits men on a continuous basis, primarily throughout Maryland, who hold a sincere interest in history and the War Between the States.

During the year, our Company participates in three major reenactments, two drill and living history encampments, one to two marches for preservation, dedication ceremonies, parades and a field trip.  Our members learn the drill and the manual of arms as did the volunteers of 1861.  Company C is strictly a history oriented, non-profit organization.  Our members find reenacting both exciting and rewarding.  The original Company C was formed from men of Anne Arundel County and many of our members are residents of Anne Arundel County.  Company meetings are held throughout the year and we encourage those who share the same interest in this heritage to inquire about becoming a member.

We understand that because of your family and work schedule you may miss some events from time to time and we only ask that you make as many as possible.  In order to maintain membership in Company C, you are required to make at least two of the three reenactments and one of the drills.  However, the two drills are mandatory for new members during the first year of membership.  Drills are conducted at all of the scheduled events and new members need to have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the drill routine before the Company participates in these scheduled events.

Company C strives for historic authenticity by using quality reproductions of uniforms, clothing, weaponry and assorted equipment of the Maryland Confederate Infantrymen.  Uniforms are the same style and material of the uniforms worn by the original 2nd Maryland.  We have our own suppliers for this and will help you when ordering.

The average cost for this educational opportunity is about $1,100 if everything were purchased at one time.  Keep in mind that you do not need to buy everything all at once.  It is suggested that you start with the uniform.  You may take up to a year to be fully outfitted.

Following the model and tradition of the original Company C, today's Company is a fighting, line infantry Company that depicts the Maryland Confederate infantryman as he lived, marched and fought in the field.  Nothing more and nothing less. Plain and simply, as a re-enactment organization, we cannot be everything to everyone.

The little physical discomfort we may experience at a weekend long re-enactment can never remotely reproduce the discomfort, hunger, sickness and pain that the original veterans were subjected to nor experienced.  Potential new recruits should be advised that much of becoming a Civil War re-enactor is camping in the outdoors and living in the field.  This means that throughout different times and seasons of the year, there exists the strong possibility that you will become very hot, sweaty and dirty, cold and wet, begin to smell like a water buffalo and will almost invariably be required to pitch your shelter tent in a field of thistles, rocks, poison ivy, assorted species of ants and spiders and rather large, aromatic cow pies. . . .imagine that!  Just like the original Civil War soldiers!  Such is the realm of the infantryman, alas!

Members should posses the physical stamina to help them safely and comfortably survive the rigors of the field and the hardships of the campaign.  This means being able to march down a long and often dusty road. . .to move across fields and hills. . .through a tangled woods--often at double-quick.  Some warm weather events can be brutally hot, while night temperatures at a spring or fall event can chill a soldier to the bone!  As re-enactors, recruits as well as veterans, must be prepared to meet these challenges to the mind and body.

Company C of the 2nd Maryland Infantry, promises to be one of the finest Confederate re-enacting units in the field today.  Your devoted interest and participation in the unit will help keep our organization healthy and strong.  It will render rewarding, stirring and exciting memories that will fill your heart with pride and keep you smiling a lifetime!

A Company meeting is scheduled annually in January or February to renew membership and discuss the upcoming events for the calendar year.  Dues of $20.00 per member are collected.  A portion of this membership fee goes towards insurance and the remainder for food purchased for the Company events.

If you want to live and feel what you read, come join us and "Smell the Smoke" as we reenactors say.  For more information about reenacting and Company C, please contact David Riden (410) 721-1154 or  Rob Griesbach (301) 596-9055.

     Good luck. . . and good re-enacting!
